I stayed at Ashtamudi in February during a month long backpacking trip in India. The place is not really a "homestay" but more like a guest house, but still an excellent guest house. We stayed in the bamboo room on the top floor which was clean and comfortable. Food (not included in rates) was tasty and served on the top floor overlooking a small alley. Subhash and his wife were very friendly and helpful. He organized a house boat trip for us which was affordable and relaxing. The only thing that was off-putting was we sometimes felt that we were being pushed to take tours or transportation organized through them (although you'll find that in most places in India).
For accommodation in Alleypey, Ashtamudi is a good place, very central and clean.
