“***** Worst do not go **************”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

I have been to this resort on Dec 2011 with my family and booked a non a/c bamboo cottage, first of all this resort is 15 kms away from aleppey city and only way of travelling is by auto, each time i had spent 300 to reach aleppey, i found the following major drawbacks of this resort

-Far from city
-Worst rooms (dirty..no maintenance & room service)
-Worst food (even to get this they'll take hours in the restaurant)
-Staff is not polite
-Low voltage during day time, fan will also not run properly
-Resort is still under development, no proper way to walk
-Items are very costly in restaurant, looks like the're targetting fe foreigners
-Lot of attention towards foreigners
-Lot of insects in and around cottage

after I reach there, the reception guys informed that 90% of the tourists are foreigners
Great thing about this resort is it's just 1 min walk from cottages
So, if you want to have some drink & enjoy in beach..then it's suitable for you..othewise, you can avoid this place.

Room Tip: you can go for A/C cottage

We are regular travellers around the globe and in India. Must say this place is pathetic and the worst place ever stayed in. Firstly on arrival itself the stench of dried fish was overbearing. The photographs are misleading. The washrooms are open to sky with no flooring near the shower area due to which there are lot of insects and reptiles around. As our 6 yr old son was petrified of this we had to check out and look for another place. The staff was very rude and refused to refund any money. .The rates are exhobitant and would rate it less than a 2 star hotel. We forfited our amount and stayed at nearby The Turtle Bay Resort which was cheaper and excellent.

It was our honeymoon and after a very nice day on the houseboat, we were looking forward for the stay.
The cottages were not clean and the bed sheets were stained!!!
The quality of the food was very bad. Its a big shame to provide low quality food to customers It boasts of lot of activities near by but unfortunately none are true.
The beach was also not impressive!!!
I remember clearly looting us of an additional 1.5k for a taxi trip from there to kochin.
Wanted to write this for a long time.
A question to the owners and the management:
Do you know what a resort is? If not, please venture out. See some. Upgrade your resort and then charge the money you guys are charging now. It is a shame to keep it open !!!

Well, for starters, this is a nice hotel...no doubt about this. We visited this place during peak Christmas - New Year period and even though the rack rates were crazy high, we were able to make some good bargains on the price (was still high, though). The best part about this Resort is its relative obscurity, both location-wise and publicity-wise. As an Indian, I am used to (though not really enjoy) bustling masses of my fellow country-mates, even if I am travelling to a remote location in Antarctica, which while is a great socializing experience, is not always preferable. Sometimes one just wants alone time, peace, relaxation. Thankfully, Marari provided that in plenty. Even during peak season, I found the private beach mostly empty, the restaurant ambience quiet and relaxing and I dont remember having to shout at the top of my voice while engaging in a regular conversation, so major props to this place. Its a hit with foreigners (do i know the reason?) and is accordingly priced. The major grouse is that they take the entire remote, secluded feel rather seriously, so there is absolutely nothing to do except laze on the beach or take a dip in the Arabian Sea. The beach is surprisingly clean, the atmosphere quiet, the rooms are nice, clean, airy and sunny (like i prefer) and the ace-in-the-pack are the open-air baths and loos (well documented in these reviews)...As an Indian, I would have been expected to be used to relieving myself in the open, but it was a bit odd the first time. Then my Indianess took over and I was completely at home at the place (dont worry, there is a 8-9 feet high wall around the open-air loo, so unless some over-zealous peeping tom is perched on top of a coconut tree, your privacy is preserved)....
Like I mentioned earlier, if you are looking for even a hint of activity, whether water-sport, adventure, trek there is nothing much forthcoming....No room for recreational activities like Pool, TT, etc too...Some treks, visits can be arranged by requesting at the front-desk but they will rip you off on it as well....After having nothing to do for few days, my partner and I decided to rent a bike and venture across the region on our own....What we got was a shame of a motorbike, which I had to first take to a mechanic to have its brake drum fixed, which used to cry in agony when i pressed the brake...Fuel cost was also on me...
Well, no super luxury, super pampering here...just peaceful relaxation and for many people (like me ...to a degree) is a big draw from their vacation spot....There are a few other similarly themed resorts in the area, which are privately owned (this is government run, but surprisingly well kept at that)...so check those out instead....
Food is OK, very pricy and generally there is no la-carte option, only the exorbitantly priced buffet....keeping with the natural theme, there were a lot of flies on the breakfast spread....(well, you asked for it)....service is nothing much to right about too....also I did not notice a pool (or maybe I did not feel the need, since I was dipping in the great big natural pool called the Arabian Sea)...so like i said, if you want to find a place to relax, away from the world, go here, otherwise you can find other places...

This is a great hotel with fantastic facilities and attentive staff. The hotel has a great pool as well as access to a beautiful looking beach. There are a couple of restaurants and the Seafood Grill on the beach serves wonderful fish.

Unfortunately there is a downside. The hotel is surrounded by a village of a couple of thousand people and they use the beach as their toilet....so the sand and sea are horribly polluted. The sight of young children swimming amongst the turds made me feel ill! It is a real shame that the hotel does not let people know about the issue!

Stayed 2 nights in November. Excellent location nice beach and chalet rooms. Our room had a leaky toilet but staffed shrugged and put a towel on the floor. Other chalets were full. A few times during the day the open bathroom was literally covered in flies and they were a nuiscance on the beach. The staff claimed it was because the fishermen left the fish on the beach to dry attracting the flies - seems no energy to protect the rooms.
The food was basic and again at breakfast all plates had to be covered against the flies. When anyone came into the restaurant a cloud of flies took off from the doormat.
Nice location and rooms spoilt by poor management and I would suggest this place is a health hazard!

A great resort to unwind from the regular day to day chaos. The resort has very few cottages which are unattached to each other, which gives you a wonderful privacy. The rooms of your cottage directly opens into a beautiful garden and thereafter the beach starts. A clean beach with beautiful white sand, clean to the core, no outsiders strolling around - you get a kind of private beach feeling. Cottages and the rooms there are tastefully done, too much detailing has gone into maintaining natural coolness in the rooms (though Air Conditioning is there). The garden has these wonderful palm trees with the kind of nets tied between the 2 of them where you can relax during the evening (ideal during sunset) overlooking the beach and the clear stars lit sky above you.

I should specifically mention about the restaurant, which is right at a corner of this same garden. So plan for a wonderful candle light during for one of the night during your stay, unforgettable - great cuisine (anything from seafood to other non-veg to veg food) with a great ambience (naturally architectured) and great sorrounding directly overlooking the beach and the sea.

Since there are few cottages please make sure that you book in advance. Their site is - http://www.atdcalleppey.com/
