“Backwaters experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2011

We selected this resort as we wanted to spend one night in boat and one night in the resort. As April being a low season, expected less rush, and so it was, calm and peaceful. The resort is right on the backwaters of Alappuzha. The rooms were big and spacious with shower cubs in the bathrooms. The rooms were quite large for standard rooms, and my family of 4 with 2 kids could easily fit in. There is enough space all around with a swimming pool to relax.

Great place to spend time. Food is good provided you go for Kerala food, others were not that upto the mark. Service is the place is excellent, far above par.

Ayurvedic massage is available, which is good as well.

My kids had collected the DVD's from reception and played them in the room, thus keeping them busy.

I would definitely recommend the place to all.

I stayed in this hotel for two nights after seeing hotel photos and reading reviews at tripadvisor. But after two nights I realized that I have made a wrong choice.

The whole trip started with a problem. I reached hotel at 1:15 after 4.5 hours drive from munnar. On arrival, I was informed that check in time is 2:00 pm and rooms are not clean. If you reach before check in time, they may charge extra. I was allotted a ground floor room just before swimming pool, which they claimed that it is an upgraded room. Whereas I had not booked this room. After arguing with them and wait of around one and half hour I was allotted my originally booked room. Not a nice way to start the whole trip.

The Hotel is situated at an isolated space. It is very far away from alleppey town and beach (about 20-25 km). The rooms are not cozy. Outdated furniture takes all the space. There is no balcony in the rooms. Only few rooms are having balcony at the ground floor only. Quite often the room entry card system stops working. During the stay one gets the feeling as one is locked up in a fort surrounded by electronic gadgets.

The menu card is very limited and food is just OK. I ordered just once. Be prepared to spend a lot on ordered food as it is very costly. Stay at Lemon tree and using there services can cost you a earth.

The only positive thing was the polite and courteous staff. But as they are part of a system, their polite nature can't provide solution to your problems.

Don't get deceived by Photos of Hotel. Though all rooms are in front of Backwater lake but between room and lake there is a swimming pool. One may not get the relaxing atmosphere just after seeing lake side photos of the hotel.

If you want a swimming pool with outdated luxury at an isolated place then go for it.... But if you want to to explore allpey town/beach/boating and other things at a good price then stay away from this Hotel....

Room Tip: During resservation, make sure what rooms you get.

A small property located with a breath-taking view of the Vembanad Lake. Ideal for a quiet vacation as all hotels in this area are well away from city life.

The hotel is excellent in terms of the resort, rooms as well as the hospitality. The staff is excellent and extremely eager. The restaurant is fantastic with an excellent chef who is an expert both with local and continental cuisine. We had some great meals. The breakfast was the best I have had in a long time.

The rooms are great, offering all basic necessities expected in an upscale property. A small swimming-pool by the lake was very popular with the residents. We were in a lake view room which over-saw the swimming pool as well as the lake. One could sit for hours admiring the view.

The spa was a disappointment though. The place also does not have a liquor licence and therefore does not have a bar.

Overall a good resort. Don't take their package offers, just book the rooms and take the services while you are there.
Service and care by the staff is fantastic, you get what you order once you are in the resort. Vinu and Gintu took special care for services. Best part is the restaurant and its staff.
The package offers are not value for money (the boat ride, a six seater small motor boat, from resort to the island and back is charged Rs. 3000 in package which you can get there itself in Rs.650, same goes for the ayurveda massage package for which they charge Rs.3000 for a couple in package and if you avail it there it would cost 1350 per person all inclusive).
It is far from Alleppey (around 20km) so no channel/ canal boat rides there. Nice pool which is there on the lake front itself. Good for relaxing in the resort itself.
They do not have a liquor license :-(

Room Tip: Boat cruise, ayurveda massage not worth the money

My husband and I stayed at the Lemon Tree for 5 nights in total. We had booked 4 nights through Expedia and got a special rate. We then chose to do a one night backwater cruise - Universal is the best, we searched high and low.
We came back after the cruise and stayed an extra night at the Lemon Tree because we liked it so much.
On arrival we were greeted by warm, broad Keralan smiles and a necklace of flowers. We were immediately upgraded to a lake view room - can't remember the number but it is below the restaurant (pros and cons come later). The room was spotless and had the most wonderful view with the lake a few metres away and a hammock to swing in. Halls and walls were regularly sprayed which kept Mozzies and other critters at bay and early evening the corridoors were wafted with insence which smelt lovely and kept the little biters away.
The food was amazing, the placemats with jokes on felt a little out of place, but gave some entertainment whilst waiting for your food to be cooked fresh - well worth it. The buffet was excellent too and breakfast offers western and Indian options as well as eggs cooked to order.
There is no alcohol licence here yet (not that it bothered us) but they are getting one later this year. If you fancy a beer or wine you can get an autorickshaw into town and they will take you to the beer shop - an experience in itself! If you are female then ask the driver to Q for you - he'll be very happy to for a few extra rupees. It is inappropriate for women to buy alcohol at these places.
Our days were spent mostly by the pool which was lovely and warm. It had a slight PH problem when we first arrived which made it cloudy but this cleared up by midafternoon and it was fine.
You can take a tour on the lake, local fisherman can arrange for you to fish or sightseeing boats will cruise you around. The lake is very quiet in the evening and early morning as no boats with engines is allowed after 5.30pm.
The Lemon Tree has its very own houseboat where you can have a dinner cruise or an overnight stay, but to be honest this is expensive and there are nicer boats available (Universal being one). The staff are very happy for you to be collected from the Hotel jetty (SO COOL) and whisked off on your backwater cruise by another operator.
To venture into Muhamma which is a lovely lttle town, or Allepey go by Rickshaw. It will only cost around 80 rps and the driver will stop wherever you want to and wait (you'll need to pay him more for this, but it is well worth it). There are some lovely temples in the area - ask to see the Krishna temple or a plethora of others in the vicinity. If your driver is Hindu and speaks some English you will get a tourguide thrown in as well!

The hotel has an Ayurvedic room where they offer treatments. I highly reccommend Shirodhara with a full body massage. Keralan massage is different from other types and certainly different from Western massage. Ladies, expect boobs and butt to be massaged and you'll usually be naked, or at the most have a little loincloth on so put any inhibitions aside! You may be placed on a beautiful wooden table and slathered head to toe in coconut oil whilst you are fairly vigorously massaged. They may use slower strokes and if you ask they definately will adjust their pressure to your taste. They may also press various 'marma' points which help the flow of energy around the body.
Then Shirodhara...mmm... blissful relaxation. A brass pot is suspended above your forehead and you are laying on you back (covered this time). Warm oil is dribbled on your forehead and the therapist gently sways the pot back and forth, swiggling oil around your brow. It will smooth all of your stresses away, try it!
The advantage of having it here is that they use the oil only once - in some places they strain it and use again - eeww!
Also, most places will say 'men to men and women to women' with regard their massages. Make sure you have a therapist of the same sex working on you to avoid any awkwardness (some people have reported innapropriate behaviour in some of the street Ayurvedic centres that are unapproved) I am sure most places are fine, but it is better to avoid any unpleasant situations. At the Lemon Tree you are fine.
The Pros - 5* service, warm and friendly people, cookery classes (by appointment), 1st class view over Vembanand Lake, quiet, clean, excellent food, ayruvedic room.
Cons - if you want a central location then this is not the Hotel for you. It is only 10 mins away from the hustle and bustle of Allepey so to me is perfect. Also if you stay in one of the rooms under the restaurant you may like to have earplugs if you are not an early riser as the sound of chairs scraping on the floor may be an issue. We were awake before this became a problem for us.
Altogether a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: The lakeside rooms are lovely

I was given lemon tree choice by my tour operator. I was planning for ABAD whispering palms kumarkom. But he insisted me to stay at lemon tree. Well after coming to the hotel we were just free. Our room was given check in was qiute qiuck. The service was excellant. The restaurant manager, the pool operator the other staffs and waiters were all good and had a smile on their face everytime. Their service was good. I loved this hotel. The rooms were quite big enough, bathrooms and toiletries, the pool, the lake face location everything was good. The breakfast was excellant and the dinner was very very good and it was ala carte but we were in MAP plan so we were given any choice of food to select from the menu except the chef special and soft drinks. Complimentary 2 bottles of water were given.
Now coming to the minus points: The hotel is far from main town and there is nothing to do near by. Going to the town take 20 to 25 minutes. No other food places around. The food charges are on a very higher side as this is a 4 or 5 star property. So eating here may cost higher be prepared. The gym was ok but treadmill was out of order. The pool had extra amount of chlorine which caused me eye irritation and for 3 hours tears ran down my eyes. Thanks to the restaurant manager he gave me cold milk to pour in my eyes by which I felt better as there was no eye drops available with the hotel staff..
Overall for a calm and cool stay you can come here without any hesitation. Just book this hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms are pool and lake facing so no problem.
