What an experience. The village manager solved our booking fiasco. We were put in a "residence inn" with a host family. My wife and I stayed at 26 Xianyuan Street. This is geographically in the center of town. A large courtyard makes the center significant. Zhouzhang has many dealers in pearls, art, candies and lots of restaurants. Much of the excitement to visit Zhouzhuang Water Town is the "double bridge". Tour guides with groups can be loud as tour groups gather at historical sites. TheZhang House in particular dates back to the 14th century.
We purchased silk, a teapot carved from stone, a calligraphy brush, a painting of the town, a cotton jacket, alcohol from the local distillery and blessing from keepers of the local Taoist temple. Zhouzhang also has a local beer which is good. The ancient platform has performances four time daily beginning at 10:45. Tea is served in the balcony. Most attractions other than the "strange loft" are included with admission to the Town (100RMB daily).
If you need a driver to get there or back, contact me as I have a number and will give a good reference. Also a phone number to connect with hotel managers. The trip advisor listing for the International Hostel can be confused with another hostel outside the local 5-star rated village. Neither booking.com or c-trip give accurate descriptions. Check with Hosteling International for the correct booking.
