My plan, before arriving at Distant Relatives, was to stay for a week. One month later, I finally paid my bill for the last time, hugging the staff and the owners with tears in my eyes, hardly believing that I was tearing myself away from one of the most beautiful places I'd ever been.
The night I arrived at the backpackers, I was welcomed with open arms into a social oasis. This place doesn't just attract intrepid travelers; a huge contingent of locals were there, enjoying dinner and drinks by the pool. More than just a backpackers' retreat, it's a gateway into the Kilifi community in many ways. The lodge offers community events nearly every week, ranging from mellow barbecues in the garden to film screenings and live music.
From their spacious private rooms to their airy dorms, Distant Relatives has a keen grasp on what it means to mix comfort with aesthetics and sustainability. The compost toilets and stunning outdoor bamboo showers help guests be mindful of their surroundings, and add an element of intrigue not often found at backpackers in the rest of the country.
They offer three meals a day at very reasonable prices, and the food is flavorful, culturally appropriate, and features as much fresh-caught seafood as possible. The bar is fully stocked with beer, wine and spirits, and the lovely bartenders make you feel part of the family instantly.
Distant Relatives is a special place. The owners, Tom and Romain, are always keen to have a chat with the guests, and often are found connecting with travelers over Tuskers by the pool. The sincerely inclusive environment, relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings make it a difficult place to leave.
