I brought a college group from my church for a weekend getaway before everyone had to go back to school. There were 15 college students and 4 adults. We went knowing that there was a threat of extremely cold weather and snow. It is the Smokies, so whenever you go during the winter months that threat is always going to be there. This weekend was the threat of the Polar Vortex extreme cold hitting the Smokies. But, before I'll get to that later, but let me tell you the positives of the cabin we stayed in, "Riverside Lodge" from Jan. 4-6.
The cabin is about 10 miles from the main office of Gatlinburg Falls. It sets right on the Pigeon River and it is beautiful. I was assured by Gatlinburg Falls both on the phone and during check-in that we would love this cabin. Our assurance was true. This cabin is awesome! It had 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths and sleeps 21. Everything was clean and everything was in working order. You know college students, they don't believe until they actually see. These college students instantly loved the cabin and in the end did not want to leave. These college students didn't want to leave the cabin to go into Gatlinburg. Weather was in the 50s before the extreme cold hit and these college students were content with staying in the cabin the whole weekend.
The reason for this was that there was enough for them to do and every room was comfortable to hang out in. Then icing on the cake was walking out any of the back doors on all 3 levels and hearing the calmness of the river. How more relaxing can it get? We cooked in the kitchen for our meals. We had Sunday morning service in the living room. We just had a great weekend.
As a leader of a ministry in a church it was a blessing to see on the outside of the cabin 3 crosses built into the wall and then a cross hanging over the fireplace. It made our weekend all the more better.
Now, back to that extreme cold. We arrived on Saturday and was scheduled to leave on Monday, Jan. 6. The threat of snow and cold was growing each day. I could tell that the main road we were on, which is a state highway by the way, had Already been treated from a snow a few days before. The cabin is not in the mtns, it sits right on the foothills but you are surrounded by mtns. Even though the road was treated before, I was going to driving a 15 passenger bus on Monday morning to leave & I did have reservations. Check out time is 10am. I called the office on Sunday evening and they were gracious enough to push our check out time to 11am due to the forecasted winter weather. On Monday morning we were able to get out w/ no problem b/c the salt trucks were running full force up and down the road we were on. We did, of course, stop to enjoy the beauty of snow in the Smokey Mountains.
This was a great company to work with and they really helped me out. They provided a wonderful cabin that made a before-you-go-back-to-school weekend getaway for college students an awesome time. My extended family was so impressed with our experience and pictures that we will be planning a spring vacation w/ Gatlinburg Falls.
