“Nice place to lay your head.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2011

This is a nice, clean, well managed hotel. The room prices are some of the best in Gatlinburg and the location is perfect for us. This is where we always stay if rooms are available. Nothing fancy here and a bit of a climb if you're in the upper section but hey, you came to the Mountains so you knew climbing would eventually be involved. I would imagine that a remodeling job is in the works in the near future as this old girls got a little age on her but she suits us just fine.

This is barely a 2 star hotel. The hotel seems to be stuck in the 80's. There has not been a lot of renovations done in the last 20-25 years from what I can tell. The old heater in our room was either too hot or too cold with no in between setting. The carpet was a really nasty red that looked like it was 20 years old. The bathroom/shower was old and cramped. The restaurant has been turned into a dingy gym. The beds were small for queen sized beds and were uncomfortable with quilts that were paper thin. It is located on the edge of the Gatlinburg strip so be prepared to do a little walking. This place is in desperate need of a remodel.

This hotel is a decent place to stay for those who usually spend more time outside the room. In my opinion, I thought the location was great. It was walkable to the downtown strip where the restaurants and attractions are located. Because it's not located directly downtown, you can avoid much of the traffic that crams into Gatlinburg.

Staff was very friendly and helpful.

The rooms were clean though in need of some refurbishment (base board was torn off; chair looked a bit worn). The beds were clean except that the comforter smelled a bit gnarly. I threw it off and found the heating unit sufficient.

The Howard Johnson is perfect for someone who is looking to save on a hotel rate and is more likely to spend his or her time outside of the room; if you enjoy people watching, hiking in the Smoky's, visiting local artists and then crashing in a decent room, then go for it. You probably won't be satisfied if you plan on spending the entire day in your room.

this hotel is not located in the middle of the Gatlinburg district-it is several blocks away, although such locations as the Ripley Aquarium & Hard Rock Cafe can be seen. It is walking distance to the strip. The hotel is actually split into two bldgs....one behind the other. The outdoor pool is located off of the second bldg and although clear, it would not hurt to have the pool cleaned out (lots of debris such as leaves, bugs, etc could be seen throughout the pool). If you want to enjoy a balcony view toward Gatlinburg, request a room facing the strip or you will not see anything. The rooms are exterior corridor and have an elevator, although to access that, you have to walk or drive toward the back of the bldg(I don't know how the 2nd bldg is set up); at night the corridors are lit, but I think more lighting is needed, especially around the darker parts of the stairs. The room we stayed the night in had 2 Queen beds and was clean and setup for our arrival(we reserved ahead and asked for a roll-away bed which was in our room when we arrived); tub in the bathroom is narrower than usual but sufficed for our night stay. Air conditioner was under the window and the fan ran all night-we woke often to the sound of the thermostat kicking on & off but it was ample enough to keep the room cool in the heat. Continental breakfast was okay but my teen complained that the mini donuts they served were "stale". Staff was very kind and allowed us to check-in early. Like all older hotels, updating and maintenance to modernize or give visual appeal would be a big benefit to this facility. Aunt Bea's does not exist anymore and the space has been converted into a workout facility. I would stay here again-especially if my spouse is with me...as a woman alone, I may have to think that through(because of the exterior corridor and the darkened parts of the corridor at night).

This is an older hotel and you get what you pay for. We have stayed here several times before because we always felt safe and the location. The beds are a little hard and a few things could use updating but for the price who can complain that much. My biggest complaint is pulling out of the parking area very dangerous (blind spot). Also, we stayed beside the elevator and heard nothing as far as noise. If you want a fancy room then pay the higher price. We don't spend anytime in the room. would only suggest some new bedding. The restaurant on the sign is now gone and a gym is located in it.

Hallways to get to the room were scary. Stairs were steep, too steep. Which by the way if you are not able to walk up and down stairs, don't stay here. If you are a women traveling alone, watch your back in the hallways, no joke. Even though they have elevators, there are stairs to climb (outside) no matter what. The hallway was almost dark in the DAYLIGHT in some parts of the hallway. Too bad you didn’t feel safe here. We found our room and a horrible smell was there too. The pool water was gross and looked dirty. Front desk staff was friendly but untidy just like the hotel. The hotel IS off the main strip, but at the end. There would have been much closer hotels off the main walk way, and probably cleaner. I really don’t recommend it. Plus the pictures of the rooms are not what you get in the rooms! The carpet is not even the same color. They make the rooms look so nice and they are NOT even close. The other pictures are accurate just a ran down version of the pictures. Also, no local calls if you pick up the phone you are charged. We were not happy customers.

The pictures you see are not what you get! The beds are not comfortable, I woke up in terrible pain. The location is good. The staff was friendly and helpful.
