“Good price, Staff A+, room..well....Location....so so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

we stayed here 2 nights. The price was good ! Very good!
The staff was superb, especially the front desk person - Will.
The room was clean but small for us (2 adults, 2 kids and 1 infant).
The location, in my opinion is far from being the best in town. Try to find a hotel on Parkway street- it'll save you the walk or parking fares.

Room Tip: Choose the river side, it's nicer than the courtyard side

We have stayed at the Sidney James Motor Lodge 2 times. First was an overnight trip in June of 2011, which was fine. Room was clean, no bugs, no bad smell. 2nd time was in March of 2012. We were placed in a room that was poorly upkept. The TV did not work (the cable wire had been cut by someone) there were bugs and it felt generally unsafe. At first when we approached the front desk they did not want to move us, but after having the gentleman come up and look at the room he moved us (with his apologies) to another room, which was in much better condition. The location is okay, the pool is great, the kids loved it! Of course this is an older hotel, so it is pretty outdated, but most of the hotels in Gatlinburg with the exception of a select few are kind of outdated so it is to be expected. The price was okay, it probably should have been lower... I would stay here again if I had to, but there are better hotels out there for the price you pay. I looked at this hotel for a trip my husband and I are taking in March 2013 and they wanted 114 a night for a jacuzzi suite. I can go to Bearskin Lodge at the River which is on River Road and is a lot nicer than this hotel and get a jacuzzi suite with a fireplace and creek view for less than this, and that price includes a continental breakfast. Armed with this information, I will be staying elsewhere. For what its worth, there are better deals elsewhere for nicer places.

My Wife & I stayed here over the Christmas Holiday. We were satisfied with the room they gave us. Bed was sleepable and the room was quiet which is always an issue with us. The staff was friendly also. We stayed in the older section of this Hotel and it could use some renovating. We liked that the Hotel was off the main drag of town but was close to the Trolley stop. The pool was a nice feature as well. Breakfast in their restaurant was the only option and I do wish the room had a coffee pot. The Wi-Fi did work but was spotty. Overall we felt we got what we paid for. If you want to stay at the better places in Gatlinburg folks, you'll have to pay more!

We just stayed here, 12/27 - 12/29, not of our own choosing. We were in Gatlinburg for a youth group conference at the convention center. This hotel was one of several used by the conference. We had 4 rooms booked. Upon arriving we decided to brush our teeth, only to discover that the sink was completley clogged. Everytime we flushed the toilet our sink and tub gurgled. We left to go out thinking the sink would go down. We came back 3 hours later and the sink was still full of water. Called for maintenance and was told they had left for the day and was then hung up on. Went back out and came back about 6 hours later. Not only was the sink still full, but the tub now had about 2 inches of water from where it was clogged also and the faucet had been dripping. One of our other rooms had smelly sewage coming up through the tub so they had to use the clogged shower in our room. The room with our boys had only 1 light bulb in the entire bathroom that worked and they had to take the lid off of the toilet and wiggle the thing everytime they used it to get it to flush. The desk manager finally came at about 12:30 that night and plunged the sink and tub and told us he would have them sanitized the next morning when housekeeping came. (That would have been fine if we didn't have to use them in the meantime.) The next night one of our girls from the other room came in to take a shower in our room and laid her brand new purse on the floor under the sink and the pipes leaked rusty water all over it. Our last morning there, we tried to shower and the water pressure was so low that cold water was literaly trickeling out of the shower head. We will NOT be using this hotel again, and we have placed a call to the conference letting them know about the experience we had here.

You get what you pay for.

The pool and sauna are nice. The motel is also within a (slightly longer) walking distance to the main strip, which alleviated parking/traffic stress. The hike back up the hill helped burn off dinner calories too!

It wasn't unbearable or disgusting. (But... the same hairs that were there in the shower when arrived weren't wiped away when the housekeeping staff came through our room, nor did they leave us new soap or restock the tp...)

Room Tip: Be very careful with water temperatures! You may be in for a surprise in the shower depending on the...

I usually stay here twice a year and have not been disappointed at all in 8 years. I was here for 4 days on my most recent trip. My Courtside room on this trip was fresh and nice with a fridge. king bed and a cozy back porch. Cable TV has a good selection of channels and internet is reliable, although not lightning-fast. It's located near the center of town but it is a 4-block downhill walk into town. Keep that in mind if you have limited mobility, because the walk back uphill can be tiring after a long day! I usually stay alone and use the SJ as a base for hiking. Many main trails are within a few miles of the hotel and it's an easy drive (or fabulous walk) to a dozen traliheads. I have also taken my family there several times in the past and we all give it a thumbs up! It's very quiet being a few blocks from the madness of downtown. The pool and sauna in the main lodge are nice and some of the premium rooms are exceptional. But for the best rates and overall ease of access, I would recommend the Courtside rooms. I have stayed at some 'iffy' hotels in Gatlinburg and some really nice, expensive ones. The SJ has all the good qualities travelers need with no unpleasant surprises. The off-peak rates make this motel a genuine bargain!

Room Tip: Some 2nd floor Courtside rooms have nice porches.
