“Oasis Store Complex”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

I didn't stay in the cabins but did visit the Oasis gift shop, restaurant, gas station. The people there were very friendly and helpful. The gift store has a pretty nice variety of items including snacks and drinks. But the real jewel is the restaurant. They serve a surprising variety of home-cooked meals. We ate there both at night and the next morning and everything was great. Fast service, reasonable prices, delicious food - what else could you want? This is the only service place for about 20 miles but you shouldn't worry - you will be satisified here. Breakfast is the best, so don't miss it. Wonderful view of the dunes from the windows.

We are staying in the camping cabins. These are not for the person looking for a nice hotel...these have a bunk with a pad ( no mattress) and electricity only, no running water, but if you like to rough it a little, enjoy a peaceful spot where you can sit outside by the fire and not have to worry about anyone in the next room, this place is for you. The cabins are clean, as are the bathrooms which are close by. The lady in the store was friendly and accommodating and the location is wonderful. I would highly recommend this place!

First off, FANTASTIC VIews. The duplex is literally on the edge of the NPS property. It is 1/4 mile SOUTH of the campground, adjacent to the road. Nothing else around for miles, so it's extremely quiet. Duplex #1 has a glassed in porch/sitting area, microwave and small fridge. 2 queen beds. New tile and carpeting. Clean. No shampoo, no coffee maker, small TV, no phone (but cell phone coverage is available). Wonderful for getting early a.m. and late p.m. photos of the dunes w/ the mountains as a backdrop. We do not travel with kids or extended family, but I can see where this would be nice if some people wanted to go to dunes, and others just wanted to hang out. Duplex would also be good for couples traveling together. #2 does not have the large sitting area or access to it, but they have a deck. We never heard the other couple who stayed in #2. Oasis store and restaurant only open from 8 am to 8 pm, so plan accordingly i.e., no early morning breakfast available. Can't beat the location.

Room Tip: Duplex #1 has glassed in sitting area. #2 does not.

We stayed in cabin 4. It was near the bathrooms and had a great view of the dunes from the front porch. The lodge seemed to be lost in the 70s and the location is very desolate and windy, but for a family car trip, the cabin was affordable and fun for the kids, and we loved watching the sunset. We were also right outside the entrance to the park, so it was easy to go over to the dunes from there. If you are road tripping with your family, this is the kind of place that reminds you of roadside campgrounds as a kid: not glamorous but fun for sure

Room Tip: If you like to tent camp where there are no gravel parkinglots and square tent spots, this is the pl...

This place as backwoodsy as it was is amazing. The food was delicious...especially the homemade banana cream pie, best ive ever had. The decor could use some help but with food like this who cares? It's location is perfect, right in the outskirts of the dunes.

I have been here twice, once last year and once this year. Last year was awesome and we all had a great time and so it was decided we would camp here again this year. However, this year was a very different experience.

We booked a site that could hold up to 75 people and we had about 40 of us there. We sat around the fire playing cards and talking and laughing which apparently isn't allowed. We were told we were too loud by other campers and the site owners, despite the fact that all we were doing was talking amongst ourselves having a good time. The Oasis was told ahead of time how many of us there would be and yet they thought it was a good idea to put families and individuals next to a group of 30+ people. These individuals were literally ten feet away from us. Poor judgement on the owners part. When you offer group sites that hold that many people then you shouldn't be having families within ten feet of those sites because even if we whispered the whole night they would still be able to hear us with that many people. Group sites should be separated from the individual ones. Needless to say I will not be going back there. As others have said, there is free BLM land down the road which was a much better experience!

I recommend staying away from this place if you have a large group, despite them offering large group sites. I even recommend staying away if you are a family or individual because you'll likely get placed right next to a large group.

Our family had a great time enjoying the dynamic views from Cabin 4. My 7 year old loved the bunk beds. From our sight we had a down hill walk to the restroom, shower, and laundry building. The sight road needs smoothing out, it was very bumpy driving up. The beds were cozy and we were happy that we opted to stay in a cabin instead of camping because of the high gusts of wind. The view of the prairie, mountains, and dunes was amazing. We were close enough to go hiking to Zapata Falls, go swimming in the springs pool, and have a Cinco de Mayo diner in Alamosa. The Oasis Restaurant and Gift Shop is cute. Yummy pancakes. All around great trip!
