“Great Place to Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

We stayed here 2 nights and it was great. My kids stated it was "quaint" :) Not a fancy place but it was clean and the people that manage it were really nice. A previous review dated July 26th is spot on about the details of the place - I really don't have much else to add.

We did have a black bear stroll thru the grounds before the sun went down on the first night - kids were excited! We had planned to sleep with the back door open but I got nervous with the bear sighting. Ended up a good idea to keep the back door closed at night - the bear came back in the middle of the night and knocked down all of the hummingbird feeders!

I would definitely stay here again - the location is perfect to spend the day at Great Sand Dunes National Park and for a quick hike to Zapata Falls.

We went in this lodge to spend one night during our honey-moon!
The lodge is really wonderful and peaceful!
The landscape all around is suggestive because you can see the Great Sand Dunes N.P. and during the night...what a beautiful sky made of stars!
The room is very comfortable and clean and the bed is pretty good to sleep! There are a fridge, a microwaves, towels and an indoor swimming-pool!
Outside you can find a lot of little birds!
In the morning you can have a cup of coffee!
It's for sure a pretty nice place!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Great Sand Dunes Lodge. The owner is exceptionally friendly and kind. The room was very nice, clean and had a wonderful patio that we really enjoyed. Beautiful views of the sand dunes from the room patios complete with hummingbirds all around. So glad we stayed as it exceeded our expectations.

Reviewing the Great Sand Dunes Lodge is much like reviewing a National Park hotel: while expectations should be modest for room décor and comfort, does the lodging deliver a view, atmosphere, advantages in access to park attractions, and a good night’s sleep? The GSDL meets all of these criteria solidly, and at a decent price considering there is virtually no competition. Based on my observations this motel is popular, and was fully booked during our stay; I’d strongly advise making summer reservations in advance.

The motel is up a slope from the road leading to the national park (entrance a couple miles away), and this affords a good if somewhat distant view of the dune field (and sunsets) from every room’s patio or through their sliding glass doors. (Note that since guests will be strolling on the patio side for the view or to get to the communal barbecue area, this arrangement does not allow for assured privacy). There is no landscaping, just a natural high desert setting. All 12 rooms are in the same one-story building, in a linear layout. There is plenty of parking directly in front of the rooms. In general the facility is older, but in good condition.

The only significant amenity provided by the lodge is an indoor swimming pool (located between rooms 10 and 11), which my kids and I liked a great deal. It is of a decent size, and heated but not excessively warm. The lodge does not serve any breakfast, but coffee is available in the office. Wifi performance was satisfactory.

The rooms are just adequate. They are small and ours was cramped with two queens plus a rollaway. There was a newer style flat screen TV on the wall, plus a refrigerator and a microwave. We found that we didn’t need to use the air conditioning unit, preferring to leave the patio door open at night to enjoy the cool night air.

The only restaurant in the area, the Oasis, is about a quarter-mile walk or drive downhill, alongside the road. It is only open 8 AM to 8PM (they prefer to seat people by 7:30 PM), so don’t plan on arriving late and getting dinner. We liked the restaurant, and had no issues with the service there. As another reviewer mentioned, the Oasis rents sand boards (like snowboards) for about $20 for the day – well worth it, a unique experience which your teens especially will enjoy. (Make sure you take some of the board wax provided with the rental; boarding down the dunes is hopeless without it). The Oasis has a small store and does sell gas.

Also be sure to check on activities available at the park visitor center – my family had a great time tossing spears with an atlatl from the back patio, under the supervision of a ranger there. And you may wish to visit Zapata Falls, in a slot canyon a few miles south of the Lodge.

It hits all the key points. Great view, lots of hummingbirds, clean, excellent beds, great sized room and bathroom with decent sized bar of soap. And if you want to watch TV ( but why) a full list of channels Friend staff and owners make this place worth stopping.

Room Tip: None All room have a porch facing the park and dunes

This was the one of the cleanest places I've ever stayed. We arrived late, and we called the front desk to let them know. They very kindly left a key for us, and cautioned us more than once to be careful of deer on the road at night. He told us not to worry about the late arrival, but to be safe and take our time. They were very accommodating with coffee, etc. The hummingbirds outside were very fun to watch while drinking morning coffee and added to the view. This is not a large four/five star hotel, it's a small national park motel......a clean room to stay in while enjoying the view and the park.

The lodge is in a great location, just outside the Great Sand Dune NP gate. We stayed here for one night and had a great time here.

Room is very clean and bed is comfortable. Staff is very friendly. The view outside the window is gorgeous, you have a landscape view of great sand dune and the mountain behind it.

The only restaurant here is the Oasis down the hill about quarter mile away, and will be quite some time to wait. But this motel has gas grill outside and you can bring your own food to cook.

One of the best places I've ever stayed so close to a national park.
