My new bride and I were on the last leg of our cross-country drive, and after having to drive a few extra miles beyond Butte (the Special Olympics were in town, and hotels were booked solid), we decided to try our luck in Deer Lodge. We were looking for the Super 8, as our AAA book had not yet been updated. We stopped in, booked a room, and went up to try to get a much needed rest. When we entered the room, we were greeted by a rather odd smell (and no, it wasn't cleaning products, as you'll see in a moment). OK, so it's an older hotel... I don't expect it to smell sparkly and new. Then, my bride uses the commode... finds that it has NOT been cleaned, and warns me not to sit down without "protection". Not only that, the bathroom floor shows signs of not being cleaned in a while. When she grabs a "fresh" hand towel off the rack, to dry her hands, she notes that the towel is dirty. Not just a little stain, but like someone wiped their dirty hands, neatly folded it, putting it back on the rack. She starts checking more towels, and better than half are stained and/or dirty. We call the front desk, and ask for more towels. The night manager apologizes, says she'll bring up clean towels. When she comes to our room, she asks if we'd like to be moved to another room, instead. We accept her offer, and hope that the next room will be cleaner (We were sorely disappointed). Same story... filthy towels, bath mat did not appear to have been laundered after the last guests, and then (being on full-alert for filth) my bride pulls back the covers on the bed, to reveal stains on the sheets and pillow cases.
She then calls to politely request that we not be charged for the room, as we will be leaving. I'm standing across the room, and I can hear the previously polite manager berating her for "messing up two rooms and now you're not STAYING??!?"
On our way out and when we returned the room key, she started to say something about our ingratitude or some such, and then tried to say something derogatory about my own home and housekeeping. I didn't care to listen... I was already out the door, and halfway back to the truck. My bride received the last of the insults as we were leaving. We headed on into Missoula, and stayed at the newly renovated (and spotlessly clean) La Quinta, for only a few dollars more.
My advice is, don't bother staying in Deer Lodge, unless absolutely necessary. Butte is less than 40 miles away, and has a wealth of better managed and maintained hotels to choose from (barring any large events being in town).
