“you get your money's worth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014 via mobile

For the cost you get to tour the car museum also. We really enjoyed seeing all the old cars and there's a lot. From every year you can imagine. The prison is self guided but they give you a brochure and its easy to follow. There's spots along the way that tell history. Its very interesting

“Deer Lodge Prison and Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

Not sure what you guys were looking for. It's a great site, remember back as a child in Southern Alberta when they had the riot here, the auto museum, although not as complete as 30 years ago, is still a must see for any car buff. Viewed this in the summer of 2013, thought of it as a true gem and a must see!

“Intresting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

We stumbled along this by chance. The have documented lots of the prison history. You get to see all the different parts of the prison from the cells, visiting area, showers and prison yard. After touring the prison the price also includes a car museum with a wide variety of vehicles.

“Worth a Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We have a somewhat macabre interest in visiting old prisons, and although this isn't as polished as the Idaho State Prison in Boise this is very good. I like the self guided tour like they have here, as you can spend as much time or as little on the things you want to see. The admission price included visits to some other museums on the premise (auto is one) but due to time restraints we kept to just the prison grounds. Having the old Milwaukee Road displays next door was an added plus.

“Just an old prison”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

While this attraction IS the old Montana Prison, the operators have done little in the way of interpreting the prison life for the visitor. After paying the entrance fee, you are allowed to trudge through the lengthy pathway that walks you around the yard and in/out of buildings. Although there are some limited signs pointing out features and a few old-time pictures hanging on the walls, the paper map offers boring captions on each stop that do little to conjure up the goosebumps one should feel in such a place, ala Alcatraz (where the interpretation the the history is done exceptionally well). I was bored...I will not return anytime soon.
