“Great room, ok hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

Pros: Great location, room was nice and clean, had NO smell which is very important to us, smoke-free, beautiful view of Lake Superior, updated bathroom, nice fixtures. Loved opening the balcony door to hear the waves and the seagulls in the morning. Neutral: Breakfast was fine, hot tub was fine, some hallway noise but not bad. Bed was ok. Staff was pleasant but not extraordinary. Cons: Common areas are just ok, but the entry way had an unpleasant smell. My kids would have enjoyed a pool, but this hotel only has a hot tub. Overall, a nice stay.

During our drive of the North Shore, we spent a couple nights at the Best Western. Most (if not all) rooms have a view of Lake Superior. Ours was no exception. On both nights, we got a pizza or nachos from a local diner along with a cold beer we got at the liquor store and had our supper on the beach! Beautiful way to enjoy a meal! Room included a fridge, micro wave and coffee. The coffee at the front desk along with the coffee at the breakfast nook was WAY better and worth the walk than the coffee in the room. Good location for what we had in mind.

We have stayed at this hotel several times over the last fifteen or so years, so have watched it build two different additions over this time - and still maintain a good standard of service. We stayed in Room 216 this visit, not far from the front desk and eating area. Beds are comfortable, room lay out is good, fridge and microwave are nicely situated, and Hans Grohe shower is terrific. There is even a fancy make up mirror - a new addition since our last visit. Our view of the water and stone beach was great and the couple block walk to town is convenient. The brand new Cook County Whole Foods CO-OP is just two blocks away and a great purveyor of fresh fruit and deli items. The room also has the best book describing attractions, restaurants etc. in this area that I have ever seen.... even places to go fishing on the Gunflint Trail!

The breakfast has good hot oatmeal - with other dry cereals - plus raisins and slivered almonds, but my husband described the eggs as "dry", the sausages as "gray" , and I thought the hardboiled eggs did not taste right.( processed and peeled somewhere else?) They were also out of bananas at 745am this morning, which seemed a bit unreasonable. They do have a automatic pancake maker, which my husband thought made a "B" grade product. They also
serve donuts from what seems to be the best place in town and my spouse did like them.

The staff here is very nice and accommodating. Young employees from around the world are hired in the summer all over Grand Marais for the summer rush, so it was fun to speak with a young Chinese woman at breakfast and a young man from Macedonia, our room cleaner, this afternoon.

Room Tip: #216 was very quiet, with great view.

Great view of Lake Superior. Right on the beach. Since my room was at an extreme end of the hotel, lots of walking through a maze of hallways to find the free breakfast. Pretty minor, but when they forgot to replace the coffee on the second day it turned in to a pain to hike all the way down to the lobby.

This is a wonderful place to call home when you are in Grand Marais. The accomodations are comfortable and peaceful - the staff is wonderful. I spend one night each week on business in Grand Marais and always stay at the Best Western Plus Superior Inn & Suites. They do everything they can to make my stay easy. Great hotel, great people. Stay here!!!!!

We stayed for 2 nights in the Steeam Suites- this room is FABULOUS!!! The view of Lake Superior is oustanding- so nice to sleep with the window open and hear the waves all night. The huge tub and shower are the prefect end to a long day. The hotel is walking distance to everything in the downtown area. The staff at the hotel was very friendly. We would defintely stay here again on a return to the area.

Am traveling over the 4th of July with my 83-year old mom who is very particular about cleanliness. Best Western Plus Superior Inn & Suites has really met our needs. Very attractive, recently updated rooms. One thing I really like is how many outlets there are for using laptop and charging phones. I also really appreciate the in-room mini fridge (larger than the tiny ones) and can hold enough groceries for salads and snacks. Like another reviewer wrote, breakfast is a step up from standard fare. I NEVER eat hotel free breakfasts because of the ridiculously high carb foods, but this breakfast is different. I really enjoyed it. They even serve fresh doughnuts from World's Best Donuts, well worth their carb count, lol. And they serve fresh organic coffee! Love the balcony overlooking Artists' Point with chairs for sitting in the morning w/ a cup of that great coffee. Staff keep the breakfast area well stocked and tables clean. Beds are queen size and super comfy with extra pillows. We're staying 4 days/3 nights and am I ever glad I chose this location. Staff did a nice refresh of our room on our 2nd day and were very responsive to a couple of requests we made from housekeeping. When we checked in on the 4th, our balcony needed to be swept and chairs wiped off, I asked the front desk if someone could stop by and sweep and someone was here within minutes. This was in spite of the hotel being sold out. I was impressed by how well staffed the property is. Looking forward to our next two days here. Also want to note that a terrific food co-op is a half a block away with a great selection of high quality, organic foods. And another grocery store across the street. Great location for walking to Artists' Point, the Coast Guard station, the harbor, and all the shops and restaurants. Haven't used the whirlpool yet, so can't comment on that, but brought my swimsuit, so I plan to use.
