“A perfect stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

This was my first stay here, but it will NOT be my last. The room was just adorable, with a fireplace, private balcony, spotless bathroom, a Murphy bed (so cool), and my very own washer/dryer combination right there in the room! Amanda at the front desk was friendly, professional, and very helpful and sweet. She was the icing on the cake of a perfect visit. I slept with the balcony door wide open so I could fall asleep to the sound of the waves and the sea gulls over Lake Superior. What a wonderful place to stay!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the third floor. You have a beautiful view of Lake Superior and wide open sky!

This property is nice, but lacking in good customer service and organization. The suites (actually individually owners of each unit) are nice but lacking something....for instance, the electric fireplaces take up a large portion of the floor plan but add NO ambiance.
Location is great. We have stayed here 5 times, and noted the decrease in cleanliness and courtesy lately. We decided that we are moving on to a cheaper, friendlier place. As is mentioned in other reviews, their cancellation policy is awful.
There is no night manager. When we stayed the fire alarms went off at midnight and it took over an hour for someone to get out of bed and respond. An hour outside in one's pajamas with handsome firemen....hmmmmm....not all bad!
Another down side is that the lobby area is rented out as a party room. Seems like every time we stayed there was a local wedding or graduation, so there was no way to sit in the lobby or the patio. You were definitely forced to relax in your room. Since we had a group it was a major inconvenience, there was literally no meeting place for us.
That really sums up the feel of the place....it is there for the convenience of the staff and owners, not the hotel guests.

Room Tip: Make sure you are in a lakeside room. Ground floor is lovely as you can walk right out to the lake...

I came to Grand Marais three years ago in the middle of August with family and friends. It was one of the best trips I've ever taken, and I've traveled to many places throughout the world. My family stayed at East Bay Suites, while our friends stayed at Best Western, I believe. They agreed that our hotel was better than theirs. My favorite part of it was that the beach and lake was right in our back yard. We were able to use the wood they provided to make a campfire every night to make s'mores and roasted hot dogs. We only stayed for six days, but it felt like home because it was so comfortable. I loved that there was a kitchen in the room so that we could store some snacks and refrigerate the hot dogs. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean, and the service was excellent. I had so much fun here, and a lot of the memories were made possible by this great hotel.

Room Tip: I'm not sure if all the rooms have direct access to the lake, but if not make sure to request on...

This rating is based on customer service. My husband and I have been to East Bay suites a number of times and have always enjoyed our stay. The last reservation we made (Winter 2011) the weather was so dangerous we had to stop driving and stay in Duluth after a treacherous 5-6 hour drive. I called East Bay to ask if we can cancel our reservation because we could no longer drive on the ice and in the blizzard conditions. I was told, "The weather is not bad here." I explained our situation and was told it was not their fault the weather is bad in Duluth. I called back and asked to talk to someone else who said we could get a voucher which we never saw despite calling more than once to ask about it. We ended up paying for two nights stay which we were not able to enjoy.

It is our goal that every guest experiences a level of service that exceeds expectation and we apologize to you for not meeting that goal. We understand that weather is sometimes unpredictable and for this reason we are always more than happy to present our guests with a voucher in the amount of their deposit in which they can utilize towards a future stay. We truly hope that you will give us another chance to make things right and I encourage you to please contact me personally at 218-387-2800 Ext. 1003 or at Jennifer@eastbaysuites.com. I would be happy to assist you with the voucher for your past reservation. Again, I apologize and we hope you will be our guest again in the future.

We just spent 4 nights at the East Bay Suites during a spring break ski trip and highly recommend this place. We stayed in suite 306 and found it perfect for two adults and one child. From the moment we reserved our room we felt very welcome and were delighted that they accepted our dog too (just $20 extra per night). Our suite had a beautiful view of Lake Superior from the living area and bedroom and we loved all the amenities like a double sided fireplace in both the living room and bedroom, full kitchen, washer/dryer and huge bathroom with large soaking tub and separate shower. The place is beautifully maintained (clean - very comfortable) and included lots of unexpected things like computer w wifi, sound system, two flat screen tvs lots of books and games and scented candles and a fully-stocked kitchen. It was very cozy and the facility also offers things like free dvd's and firewood and s'mores for lakeside campfires. Grand Marais has some great places to eat too. For casual dining there's Sven &Ole's pizza and the Blue Water Cafe. For the "best breakfast on the North Shore" (according to Andrew Zimmerman and now us) there's also The Pie Place Cafe - which also serves fantastic dinners and out of this world PIE! We had a great time and were very pleasantly surprised by this charming little suite on the shore. We will definitely visit again.

Room Tip: The East Bay Suites offer complimentary access to a local fitness center and pool. We spent our time...

This was our second time at East Bay Suites. Lake Superior is my favorite place to visit, so being able to stay right on the lake is the best! On our first summer visit (5 nights), we stayed in a 2 bedroom suite & it was great for the 5 of us and our dog. On this last visit during winter (3 nights), it was just the two of us and our two dogs, so we rented a one bedroom suite. On both visits, the rooms were very clean and it was nice having the kitchen to make breakfast. For dinner, visit the Gunflint Tavern and My Sister's Place, they are within walking distance from the suites...not fancy, but good food!

Room Tip: Make sure to stay lakeside!! Very dog friendly place, but there is a $20 surcharge for dogs.

We stayed at the East Bay Suites during the spring break off season for 4 nights. We reserved the 3rd floor two bedroom, two bath suite with an awesome corner view of Lake Superior and Artist's Point. The off season price was unbeatable at $129/night. The suite was well appointed with a full, functional kitchen, living room, and two beds and full baths (ideal when traveling with a teen.) The off-season price was unbeatable and we love staying in town within walking distance of eateries, groceries, and galleries. The Gunflint trail is just up the road for exceptional snowshoeing and cross country skiing locations. I would definitely recommend East Bay Suites for a very comfortable and relaxing stay right on Lake Superior.

Room Tip: Choose a lakeside, corner suite for the best views.
