“Nice weekend away.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

East Bay Suites is located on the beautiful shore of the lake. Our three-bedroom suite had plenty of space to spread out, but also had a close-knit feel when wanted. The full kitchen was a huge plus, as we cooked nearly all of our meals. There were also games and movies available for the one rainy day during our stay. Friendly staff with many ammenities. We hope to go back during the summer season when most of the shops in town are open.

Stayed over President's Day weekend for three nights. Great location - right downtown on the lake. Even in the winter, with the windows/doors closed, we could hear the waves lapping the shore. Lots of parking for our truck & trailer (snowmobiles). Walking distance to art galleries, restaurants, shops, groceries.

Suite 306 was beautifully decorated - felt like a cabin up north. Room was very well designed, with a separate bedroom (king bed) and a pull-out leather couch. Two TVs was a surprise luxury. Kitchen with large frig/freezer with water/ice dispenser, dishwasher. Baskets of various sizes were provided to keep food items organized. Washer/Dryer in unit too. Bathroom was HUGE with separate deep tub, nice cabinet to house travel kits. Nice table for eating meals. Candles all over for ambience. Aveda products in bath; organic coffee & tea in kitchen.

Beds were comfortable, TONS of pillows. Computer provided in bedroom. Two-sided fireplace (slight clicking noise when it was running) was VERY nice. Couch plus two chairs and ottoman in living area, chairs & table on balcony as well.

DVDs were available free of charge in the lobby, as the room had a DVD & VHS player (CD player too...I think). Popcorn and lots of toppings were available on weekend nights in the community room where there were games, Wii, checkers, and a large fireplace.

Lovely place to stay - highly recommend!

First time staying @ East Bay Suites. The first impression when we walked in was the heartfelt greeting from Jim at the front desk. We truly felt welcomed. When we walked through the door to our suite it was more than we expected. Spacious, with a beautiful view of the lake. The full kitchen was well supplied with the appliances and dishes needed to feel at home. Much of the restaurants in the area are the same type/theme so staying in and cooking was a pleasure when we just didn't want to go out.
The downside is... from now on my wife wants a full suite when we travel.
East Bay suites; we'll be back.

We stayed six nights and seven days Xc sking and DH at Lusten. It is a poor snow year so we had to drive 40 minutes to Bear Skin Lodge for XC and it was delightful. The downhill was only 20 minutes away on the most senic road in Minnesota. Our 1 bedroom unit had a great view of the bay and was next to all the shopping in Grand Marais. The room is charming and cozy with nice decks. The staff is excellent. We would stay here again. Loved the Yoga.

Room Tip: We brought a humdifier.

The rooms are great - the suites have a perfect amount of space for a family to share comfortably, and the amenities (kitchen, bathroom) are up to a very high standard. The view of the lake is beautiful.

The staff is extremely courteous and helpful, and the activities and extra things that the hotel makes available are impressive and add to the experience. I really enjoyed the bikes that guests are allowed to use.

A great choice if you intend on staying in Grand Marais.

My wife and I stayed here in November, just at the beginning of the off season, so the normally high price didn't factor in. Our suite was well furnished and decorated, and of course we had a great view of Lake Superior. It worked out perfectly for us to prepare sandwiches for our daily hikes in the kitchenette and also whip up snacks after a long day. A warning - many shops and restaurants close down in Grand Marais in November, so your choices for activities and dining are reduced. Some reopen for the ski season after a couple months off.

Room Tip: Get one on Lake Superior.

I am sure a few years ago East Bay Suites was a clean, wonderful place, but we were disappointed in our stay. The overall cleanliness of our room and the property was the biggest letdown. Add on top of that it was $240+ for night's stay and we came away feeling that we over payed.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom and everything in there felt cramped. Furniture was squeezed in and moving around the room was somewhat cumbersome. Bedroom was the same. Queen size bed (comfortable) and a dresser crammed into the corner with little room to move about freely.

The fireplace which to me is the focal point of the room, was electric and you could hear wheels squeaking when you ran it. The TV above the fireplace had burn marks from when someone lit a candle under it, but the TV did work. And every carpet in the room was covered in stains.

The deck was small and the patio furniture and wood and starting to rot, but the wonderful view of the lake made us forget this. The patio door swung inward to a already cramped room, so open the door fully meant moving a chair out of the way. The screen was extremely dirty too.

The bathroom was the only part of the room that looked like it was not updated recently. Old shower (good water pressure though), old sink, but a nice high toilet. Poor lightning throughout the bathroom made it hard for my wife to primp before our evening out.

The best part of the room was the full kitchen. Modern clean appliances and a large table help ease our burden of disappointment.

We were to stay two night, but only stayed one. The woman at the front desk was very accommodating and understanding. Although there was a no cancellation policy, we were not charged for our second night. We can only assume that they filled our room and they did the honest thing and didn't double charge the room. Probably our most pleasant surprise and we called and thanked them after our trip.

Although we are disappointed by our stay, we would reconsider staying again on the sole fact that the front desk was accommodating to us. We will just prep ourselves for the cleanliness before hand.
