“comfortable accommodations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

I was on vacation with two friends and trying to keep costs low. My friend had called and talked to one of the owners who suggested a two bedroom suite. Even though we had to share the bathroom it was perfect. The room had a view of Lake Superior and a nice lawn with table, chairs, and firepit. We had originally wanted a motel close to town but glad we chose this place because it was quiet and we could sit right on the lake and relax. Room had coffee maker, small microwave and fridge. Worth the drive of 5-6 miles to town for meals. I would recommend if visiting Grand Marais.

My husband and I have been staying at Thomsonite nearly every summer for 10 years and will not consider any other place on the North Shore! We always choose Unit 7, "our cabin," which is tucked on the edge of the property next to the woods and quite private, with a covered front porch and Adirondack chairs. Magnificent views of Lake Superior from the porch as well as from the living room (with fireplace) and bedroom. Full kitchen and though smallish has always been more than adequate for us. Very comfy bed and the shower is like a spa! Great water pressure and plenty of hot water--feels like a sauna/massage! The cabin is always immaculately clean. We spend most of our time on the porch enjoying the view and on the well-kept grounds on the Lake which are expansive enough to afford all guests quiet space. There are a couple grills and three picnic tables for cooking and dining lakeside with ample room to be in your own little world. Excellent restaurants five miles away in Grand Marais, although we sometimes find it hard to tear ourselves away from this idyllic spot! Except to go "rocking" at Cut Face beach about one mile down the road towards Grand Marais. And of course the rocky shore at Thomsonite Beach with fire pits is awesome for evening fires right at the Lake's edge, listening to the waves, sometimes crashing and sometimes glugging, right next to you with the moon sparkling on the water. Perfect for recharging the soul! Lee and Scott, the owners, are the most gracious, friendly hosts and remember us from year to year, which is a welcoming personal touch. We highly recommend staying at Thomsonite. Always quite relaxing and rejuvenating!

Room Tip: Unit 7 (the "cabin" on the front of the guesthouse) is quite private--see post. Unit 6 (r...

It probably is a good place to stay, but I'll never know. They wouldn't honor a confirmed reservation from their own online reservation system. Evidently they are unable to program all their fine print rules into their reservation system so it accepts requests contrary to their own rules and they can cancel your confirmed reservation without much of a warning. I would highly recommend only making reservations by phone with this property.

We appreciate when our guests let us know when we need to provide better service. I have contacted our reservation software system technical support and believe I have improved the response to reflect our actual reservation request/confirmation/minimum night requirement process. I hope this will not deter you from giving us another chance to stay with us when you travel to the North Shore in the future.

My husband and I used a Living Social voucher to escape from Minneapolis to the North Shore. While we didn't get our first choice of unit, we enjoyed our stay very much. Lee (the owner) is nice and friendly. She assured me that we would enjoy our room, and she was right. Unit 6 (with a loft and pullout sofa in addition to the main floor bed) had a full kitchen and was full of smartly designed spaces. We stayed for 2 nights, and enjoyed exploring the beach/property. We spent most of our time a few miles away in Grand Marais. I wish the weather and length of stay had allowed us to use the fire pit--it was a great space. We look forward to coming back another time!

Room Tip: Unit 6 is on the back side of the guest house. It still has a lake view. Only double beds (loft woul...

My boyfriend and I came to Thomsonite with a two night Living Social deal. The cozy, clean cabin style room was a great place to relax! Lee, the owner, was super knowlegable about local hiking trails and information. Any question about Grand Marais area- you can bet she has the answer! And so kind!
We were so impressed with Thomsonite and the surrounding area that we extended our trip a day. Lee gave us a great deal on our extra night in our same cabin. Amazing value!
We will definitely be back as soon as possible!!

Room Tip: Unit 9 has a fantastic view and relatively private deck.

This is the second time we have stayed at Thomsonite. We skiied at Lutsen and stay here to get away from all the hill. Before I booked our stay this winter, my daughter asked if we could stay there again. She is 18. It is quiet, clean and has beautiful views of Lake Superior. I will definately stay there again. There were three of us staying there. My daughter (18), son (13) and myself, (Dad, 44). I especially like the fact there are two bedrooms in the rooms. It works great with the kids.

We stayed in Unit #5 with another family with small children (October 2012). It is rustic, clean and charming. The view of Lake Superior is wonderful and there is a nice-size lawn for the children to run and play. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back to stay again!

Room Tip: The units are not individual cabins but part of a larger building
