“Just ok pizza”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2011

We went to Sven and Ole's based on recommendations. We ordered the Cheeseburger pizza, thick. The pizza was just ok, nothing to write home about. If we were to return to Grand Marais, we probably would go to some other place that serves pizza.

“Great place for pizza!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2011

Went here due to a friend's recommendation and it was great-tasting pizza, a nice change from the delivery chain restaurants. They were very busy so it took awhile to get our pizzas but worth the wait!

“Great Pizza in Tofte!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2010

During the Summer and Fall they have a satelite take-out pizzeria in Tofte, MN! It was great to go and pick up a deliciou pizza and bring it back to the campground to eat. How convenient is that!

We had a large, thick crust, pepperoni and sausage pizza for about $25. I think we had to wait about 20 minutes after ordering.

The Tofte location is only open on a limited basis. They also deliver for a fee.

We have also eaten at their Grand Marias location many times. They never let us down.

“Good deep dish pizza--if you like going to a bar”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2010

My wife and I recently visited Sven and Ole's Pizza in Grand Marais, Minnesota on a weekend trip to Lake Superior's North Shore and the Gunflint Trail. We had seen Sven and Ole's advertised numerous times on Duluth's television stations and, with its tag line talking about road trips up to "Gran Marhay", we wanted to satisfy our curiosity.

As at least one other reviewer on this site posted, their service/system left a lot to be desired. We arrived at about 1:45 p.m. which, even on a Saturday, we expected would be after the lunch rush. We were wrong, as we still waited in line several minutes as a larger party was ahead of us ordering, and even then we had to stand and wait for a place to sit as there were no seats available in the restaurant portion and, despite room in the adjacent (but separate) bar, we don't patronize bars. Finally a seat opened up, and maybe 10-15 minutes later our pizza arrived. A traditional hostess-assigned seating and waitress format would work much better for this place, especially given its familiarity through advertising and prominent location in a tourist-oriented town. We had also expected more of a local flair to it, especially given its northern Minnesota-sounding name and persona portrayed in the ads, but it really was just Anytown, U.S.A. pizza place with that bar, which could be done without.

Despite the service (or lack thereof) and atmosphere, we thought it was delicious pizza, especially for my wife who had been craving a good deep dish pizza for some time. The pizza had just the right amounts of everything and tasted homemade, not at all like a chain-style restaurant. We thought the price, at just over $14 including our beverages (free cup for water if you ask) and tax, was reasonable.

One more comment: Be prepared to walk a ways from where you park. The on-street parking nearby was all taken, with plenty of traffic around for a town of only 1300, and we parked about a block and a half away and walked. But at least we figured it was a little exercise to help work off some of the good meal.

While it had good deep dish pizza, I think the hassles with the ordering system, seating, and parking are enough to send me elsewhere on our next Grand Marais trip and get our deep dish closer to home. If you don't mind waiting, aren't looking for anything exceptional in the atmosphere, and are a bar patron, the place could be more to your liking.

“Pizza tastes great, they have a lot more...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2010

Pizza tastes great, they have a lot more to offer too; pasta, sides, salads, beer, wine. No, no hamburgers or fries, that's for Blue Water. After dinner dessert from Bridgeman's icecream. It's a bit pricey, but they do have to transport a lot of food from Duluth, so we never mind paying the extra.
The Northshore pizzas are like a signature style and they are amazing! Had one last night and definitely worth it!
For quicker service, get there on a Tuesday around 2 or 3, we got our pizza in less than 15 minutes!
They start a buffet on Wednesday in September so we may try that as well.
Simply the best pizza!
