“Great spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

We stayed at the Outpost this past weekend Sept. 27 - 30. It is a great little no frills hotel at a super price. It is directly across the road from the lake and so great views. There are adirondeck chairs
out in the yard for relaxing and enjoying the view. Rooms are small but super clean and comfortable beds. It is about 15 minutes north of Grand Marais so convenient to restaurants, hiking, etc. Nice little spot !

Room Tip: It's a quiet spot so all good. The little cottage out back does not have a view.

We stop here during our trips to get away from the business of Grand MArais on tourist weekends. We hike along the Superior HikingTrail near by. Their property has a trail that connects to the trail for easy access. We also travel to Hovaland for fresh bread and cheese. There are many trails to the shore that are less traveled with no people. Rooms are small but have all you need.

Room Tip: The loft has a great view in the morning with a cup of coffee.

After camping for four nights, we decided to treat ourselves to a real bed and shower before continuing our trip down the North Shore, this place was wonderful! The rooms are spacious, the beds were wonderfully comfortable (and hubby and I loved that there were extra pillows) and they were pet friendly!. The setting is amazing with access to Lake Superior and great rock picking opportunities, as well as a small creek running just next to the motel. It is a small family run place and thre were even board games and books in the office that you can take back to your room. The cost was comparable to any standard hotel, but the atmosphere was 100 times better! We will most certainly keep this on our list of places to visit again!

Room Tip: There isn't a bad room as all have access to the front lawn and a beautiful view of the lake!

Our room was not the largest, but it was clean and comfy with a great view. We loved The Outpost Motel! It was nice to sit out and enjoy the lake view in the Adirondack chairs with the beach and flowers. Very relaxing and worthwhile. Also, we had three people in a one queen bedroom so had a rollaway cot as well. It was the only comfortable cot I have ever used! The location is a bit out of town but with activities available everywhere on the North Shore it was not an inconvenience. Rather it let us explore more of the area!

We have stayed at The Outpost Motel many times over the last few years. The first time was when a bad storm came through and so many trees were down across the Gunflint Trail and we couldn't make it to our campsite so we had to head into town for shelter. The Outpost was recommended to us and so we went there and we were so happy they had a room! The owners are very nice and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. Sure, the room and bathrooms are small, but we don't mind since we go up north to spend the time outdoors and not inside a hotel room. As a Pilot/Flight Attendant couple, we live in hotels and so we appreciate not spending on overpriced lodging, we just want a clean and quiet. The Outpost is perfect for a place to stay that makes it affordable for people to keep coming to the Grand Marais area. It is only about 6 miles or so to town and is very quiet. It is also very close to Judge Magne State Park and the Nanabijou Lodge/Restaurant which we love for breakfast!
We would recommend it!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013 via mobile

We vacationed along the North Shore over Memorial Day weekend and decided to stay at the Outpost while we visited the northern part of the area. This hotel was an excellent value...great price, very clean, and in a quiet area. It's directly across the road from Lake Superior, so I got to watch a couple of beautiful sunrises and I only had to walk across the road! It's about eight miles outside Grand Marais, so we had to drive back and forth for dinners, but the quiet of the country was worth the short drive. My only complaint was the bathroom was a little small. And honestly, if that's the only problem, I'd say the owners are doing something right! Thanks for a great stay and if we are back in the area we will stay again!
