“Nice small hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

The hotel is new and pretty small. The room was very basic and didn't have many amenities. The location is very good, just a few blocks from the stores and restaurants in central Grand Marais. The owners were great.

We stayed at the Mangy Moose on a whim because of an impending winter storm that was supposed to hit the Twin Cities and all points north on the Sunday we were supposed to travel to the Gunflint Lodge. We called Dave and asked if he had any rooms available for Saturday night so we could at least get to Grand Marais before the storm hit and he was so nice and helpful and had a pet friendly room for us so we took it. My husband doesn't like driving in bad weather, even though we have a four wheel drive truck, so he was relieved to get that room. The room was #4 and it was super clean and plenty big enough for us and our Cocker Spaniel. Queen bed, twin bed, flat screen tv with cable, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator and within walking distance to the downtown area. Perfect location and Dave was extremely helpful with suggestions on places to eat, although we weren't strangers to the area. We have been to Grand Marais several times and we love it there. Now we know where to stay every time we go back. Wouldn't stay anyplace else...it's that nice. So much better than the "big" chain across the street. Met Don the next day while they were shoveling and he's just as nice as Dave and even let us stay an extra hour before we continued on up the Gunflint Trail. Didn't snow as much as they predicted, but the traveling through the Twin Cities would have been dangerous, as they got a lot of snow. So glad we discovered the Mangy Moose...we highly recommend it!

My husband and daughter stayed at the Mangy Moose in September 2012. Not only was the room cozy and clean with reasonable rates, but the hosts made them feel right at home. Don and Dave offered suggestions for their trip to Isle Royale and the best places to eat in the area. This is a fun place to stay and is a welcome break from chain motels.

My parents and I stayed at The Mangy Moose over the past weekend and were incredibly pleased with our experience. Don and Dave were very warm and had great sightseeing recommendations to help us make the most of our weekend. The beds and pillows in room number 5 were very comfortable and we all slept great! The property is meticulously maintained and the guys are always available for questions, and most hospitable.

The motel has great access to downtown, the Gunflint Trail, Devil's Kettle, and the High Falls. We really enjoyed our time!

Stayed here for 2 nights while we were Leaf Peepers in the area. Reasonable rates, the room was clean, with fridge, microwave and coffeepot, great tv. It was perfect. Check-in was a breeze, our room was nice and cozy. Within walking distance to just about everything. If we go back to MN I would stay here!

A visit to the MN north shore is an annual must-do for us. We always spend at least a day and night in Grand Marais. Over the past 40 years, we have stayed in every hotel in town. This year, we finally found IT! The perfect place! A small honest-to-goodness motel. Park in front of the room, sit outside the room at the table and chairs or mosey over to the picnic table for a bit. Walking distance to downtown and several restaurants on Hwy 61. Knotty pine walls; quilts on the beds - perfect! Immaculate! Great owners - great price - great stay! We'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Some rooms are pet-friendly; some are pet-free. All are non-smoking. We have been there twice this s...

I just got done comparing rates for other nearby hotels for the same weekend (Sept 14,15 2012) we were in Grand Marais and found we paid about half at the Mangy Moose what the other standard hotels would have cost. The Mangy Moose is a motel so we had our own little 'cabin' with a stoop outside where we enjoyed cocktails both nights before we went out for dinner. The owners stopped by and chatted with us and were very sweet to our dog - and by the way, no extra charge for the dog... The room looked newly remodeled and was clean and comfortable and quiet - and in a great location. It was a short walk to the beach across the road to photograph the sunrise yet it was not in the thick of the heavy traffic that we experienced a few blocks away in the middle of the downtown area. I'll stay here next time.

Room Tip: Room 6: tiny but comfortable, suitable for one person or a couple.
