“Pleasant stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2010

Enjoyed:
- the star gazing
- the wolf howling walk
- the cabins
- the remote location

Improvement recommendation: more healthy food options for breakfast

Even though we were here of season, I enjoyed the walking. There was a lot of damage to the woods in the neighbourhood due to fires and storms - but the walks to Loon lake and Magnetic rock were great

I originally visited Gunflint on a girl's weekend. It was so wonderful to leave everything at home and just be in nature with my friend and relax. We fell in love with the place. I just had to bring my family back, so we came over Thanksgiving for an extended weekend. As soon as we hit the Gunflint Trail, my husband started to comment about how beautiful the surroundings were. When we pulled up to the main lodge and he saw the view, I knew it would be a hit. I love that you cannot get cell phone reception here. It really is an opportunity to completely "unplug" and enjoy being with your family or friends. The rooms have televisions with DVD/VHS but do not receive cable service (a plus, in my opinion). You can check out movies from the main lodge (the selection isn't great, so if you really want to watch movies you may want to bring your own). We stayed in a cabin with a full kitchen and two beds and two baths with a sauna. Our window overlooked the lake. The view was gorgeous. Each cabin has a birdfeeder out in front and the main lodge provides bird and deer food free of charge. The food at the lodge is very good. The portions are huge. The service is great (but not overly solicitous) the people that work there are really nice and the ambience is conducive to relaxation. The main lodge has a huge fireplace and games you can play while looking out at the lake. There is a bar in the main part of the lodge that also serves yummy casual food (try the wild rice quesadillas). Attached to the bar area is another dining area called Justine's with gourmet meals. Delicious. There is a dock with boats you can use for fishing. There is a horse stable with rides that cost additional. The hiking is amazing. My daughter, 5, loved the Lonely Lake trail. It was just about a mile and perfect for younger kids with lots of nature experiences. My husband enjoyed a solitary hike that went up to the "summit" with stunning views of the lake and across to Canada. The naturalist activities are really great and varied. My daughter loved the arts and crafts. If you are looking for a vibrant night life and tons of activities, this is not the vacation for you. If you are looking for a place to get away from it all and relax, Gunflint Lodge is PERFECT. My daughter keeps asking when we are going back to "our cabin" at Gunflint.

We wanted to get away over New Year's Eve and chose this remote resort. I did quite a bit of comparison shopping first, so I new what I was getting into. We were definitely not disappointed. No phones, no TV's, just pure quiet and each other. We were in a Romantic Cottage with a huge jacuzzi that faced the lake. The (tame) deer came right up to the window several times a day to check on us. The steam shower was great, as was the King size bed. The Romantic Cottages are in their own little section, just a few steps away from the lodge where there are two restaurants...very convenient. We cross country skied (trails a little disappointing), hiked and did the dog sled. There were very few guests there, so we felt as if we had the resort to ourselves. If anything could be improved, I'd say it should be the friendliness of the staff. Mandy was great and it was obvious she loved her job....not so sure if the others were glad to be there. We had a great vacation, "disconnected" from the rest of the busy world and will definitely return, maybe next time in the summer to see the difference. The winter hold a special beauty and there's nothing more romantic than a fire, jacuzzi, and watching the deer with someone you love. The Gunflint Lodge is just that place.

We just returned from our second visit to Gunflint Lodge and I am already thinking about going back. We stayed in romantic cabin #6 and were very pleased with how clean, warm and spacious the cabin was. It has a fireplace and two-person jacuzzi that looks out over gunflint lake. Nice kitchen with all the amenities, naturalist activities every day, beautiful scenery, quiet cabins and good food in the lodge. The second morning we watched 3 wolves walk across the frozen lake. We spent our days snowshoeing around in the woods and up to the various lookout points and never came across another human. It's a bit pricey depdending on when you go but completely worth the money. The staff are very friendly and helpful. No cell phone service, no televison stations and one local community radio station. Pure bliss!

We love Gunflint Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. Bruce Kerfoot was born there and he and his beautiful wife, Sue, are the owners and lodge masters extraordinaire! We visit at least once a year, sometimes twice, EVERY YEAR!

It was cold when we arrived and there was no heat in our cabin. We had to run the sauna and stove to get heat. When they tried to fix it, we had too much heat during the day, and none again at night. We never did get the heat problem fixed while we were there. There was also a very noisy transformer that hummed and buzzed all night, requiring earplugs for us to sleep! Not exactly the peace and quiet we came for. We were in the oldest cabin there, but paid the same as the other cabins whose heat worked and were quiet. When we complained about it, we were given a very small deduction to our bill, but only after asking for it. No offer was made to compensate us for our stressful experience. The food was good and the naturalist was good, but we would not go back. Also, the horseback riding was overpriced and only about a 1/2 hour of actual riding when we paid for an hour. The wranglers said nothing at all about the terrain we were riding through or the history of the area and we only walked, even though we were all experienced horse owners.

Spent the weekend at the Gunflint Lodge in Grand Marais, MN and did not want to leave. Perfect place to get away from it all. Cabins are well-appointed, food at Lodge is absolutely delicious and amenities at resort are plentiful.
