“Well run and beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2011

The Annie Mae was an excellent place to stay. I am unable to comment on the value/price aspects of it as we stayed there as part of a package tour, however, like most things in Alaska, prices seemed a bit steep, but it seems only fair considering the difficulties with getting supplies, etc... to such a remote location. The location is very nice. They are tucked away near forests and meadows and have access to a beautiful sand flat/tidal flat area that leads down to the ocean. There are beautiful wild flowers and in late july there are TONS of wild strawberries to pick in nearby fields. We saw bear prints in the nearby sand flats, but no bears and supposedly a moose has been known to show up from time to time. The rooms are average sized with nice bathrooms. They suffer a little bit from water pressure and hot water supply issues during times of high demand (when our group of 10 all tried to shower at once we all ran out of water). There is a very nice lobby/sitting area with many books about local attractions and books to borrow for general reading. They do have wifi, but the signal is very weak in the rooms and is $5 a day. The food was very good to outstanding. They make their own spruce tip syrup that makes breakfast wonderful. Dinners were generally very good (not outstanding), using a lot of local seafood and well cooked steaks. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful with great knowledge of local activities. They offer free use bicycles to get around "town." My only complaint is that the location is a bit removed from the center of town and they only real way of getting around is by bicycle, which is a bit problematic if the weather is bad or you don't feel like biking. Overall, though, this is a great place to stay, its clean, well run, and has a very homey, comfortable feel.

Room Tip: There was a great room on the second floor corner whose name I can't recall that I would highly...

I had three nights here with a week between the first two and the last. A kayaking trip was in between. The lodge is out of the main part of town near a large field and path to the beach. The staff were all very friendly and helpful with suggestions about what to do in the area. The room was very clean and comfortable with billowy comforters on the bed. Some rooms are with bath some share. It felt like home. They had complementary breakfast buffet with fresh breads and cereals and juice. Hot entrees were available from the kitchen at reasonable prices. They were GREAT. They never did get the internet going for me. Bikes are available to ride into town or to to the park.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that opens to the outside. Noise from downstairs filters into the inside rooms.

This was an Exploritas/Elderhostel trip over the Labor Day week with 18 other travelers. The trundle bed was very comfortable and the drawers held all of my cold weather clothing. Wall hooks held jackets. I had one of the rooms that weren't en suite, so I used a shared bathroom at the end of the upstairs hall and the lodge provided a nice bathrobe for me to use. My corner room, which I didn't share with anyone, looked out over the fields and I heard bird song mornings and afternoons. All of the meals were not only delicious but were plentiful. The staff were fantasic, hospitable and made every effort to accomodate you. Bread was freshly baked every day for meals and sandwiches for our bag lunches on day trips. The community room on the first floor had chinese checkers, puzzles, playing cards, etc. and we played games almost every night. We met Gustavus residents and enjoyed hearing their stories. The day trips that Exploritas arranged were so much fun. Non-group travelers would be able to have the lodge arrange the same trips. This is a family run lodge and I'd go back to stay there on my own. If you are looking for a terrific, small and intimate place to stay, I highly recommend you really consider the Annie Mae Lodge.

It was fun to ride their bikes into the 'town' of Gustavus for pizza, and then out to the boat docks. This is a very relaxing place.

However, double check with them your tour reservations. They had the wrong day for our sea kayak trip, but in the end, it was no problem.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights in June at the Annie Mae and booked one of their "packages" -- whale-watching cruise, Glacier Bay Cruise, rt airfare to/from Juneau, ground transfers and all meals included. This is the way to go! The staff were wonderful, the meals absolutely delicious, rooms very clean and comfortable, great views and the entire experience was the greatest. We didn't want to leave. Would definitely stay again -- longer next time! It is like staying with friends/family that you adore being around and the guests were all great as well. Loved everything about it.

We stayed at The Annie Mae Lodge for one week. It was an awesome experience. We were in Gustavus for a family wedding. What an experience it was we were greeted by the owners Leslie and Richard, we were treated royally every day we were there, these gracious owners were there every day to be sure the "King's Castle" was perfect in every way. The first evening our daughter and son inlaw joined us for dinner, the chef came to our table after we had eaten to be sure that every one's dinner was perfect, it was so good that my husband shared his port (we hand carried it with us from California) and Corona. All of the meals were outsanding, the service beyond belief, I don't remember ever staying any place where all the breads were made in the morning for that days meals, bag lunches were available if you had the need because you were going whale watching or bird watching, fishing or what ever the day held for you. Bikes were available in all sizes for your use. My daughter and I were making the wedding cake (300 or so people live in Gustavus) for 300 people. We were very busy during the day baking for two days and decorating for one day, going back to AML in the eveing where it was quiet no phones ringing or radio's or televisions blaring it was a retreat for us, in the morning we woke to the chirping of birds. The day of the wedding we ran short of table cloths for the reception which was held at the parents of the brides home, guess who came thru, yep AML. The rates are very reasonable only $140.00 a day. Housekeeping was wonderful, while we ate breakfast our room was cleaned and ready for us when we returned. This would be a great place for a retreat, or a family reunion, actually there was a family of 18 there to celebrate Great Grandpa's birthday, 5 generations were attending..The gounds are beautiful. If ever you find a need for this kind of retreat remember to try The Annie Mae Lodge.
