“September Family Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

What a delightful experience! We flew in from Austin and treated our entire family to a weekend getaway! We could not have picked a better place! The house is overflowing with rustic charm and has the feeling of home. There was truly a space for all ages that ranged from 4 to 74. Our gracious host went out his way to accomodate our stay and his apple cinamon pancakes were the best I have ever had! We will definitiely be planning another stay in the future!

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs at the end of the hall are quieter.

We planned an impromptu road trip for Mother's Day weekend and were thrilled that the Wilderness Lodge had a room available for our family of four.

The grounds are rustic and homey and awesome. Chickens clucked in the background from their coop while we sat on a long porch in comfy rocking chairs and watched our kids have a blast on the rope and tire swings.

We packed a picnic, but would feel completely comfortable using the kitchen to prepare meals next time. Everything about the lodge is welcoming and friendly. The rooms are adorned with interesting artwork and antique furniture. The beds were comfortable, clean, and eclectically made up with colorful quilts. The hallway shelves were bursting with extra blankets and towels. The long, narrow hallways and wood staircases were just begging for a charming ghost or two.

The common area/huge living room had lots of comfortable, mismatched couches and futons and extra beds by the windows. I would LOVE to come back with multiple families for a group hiking outing or family reunion. That common room just screams slumber party fun. We had a wonderful cap off to our day of hiking and wading adventures, snuggling on the couches and watching Scooby Doo.

The hot springs were so pretty! They are small, so I can see them getting crowded, but the times we were there, we had them to ourselves. They are a short path away from the lodge and we felt comfortable letting our 11-year-old sneak out while we were sleeping in the early morning to enjoy some quiet relaxation away from parents and pesky younger brothers. At night, the hot springs are festively lit with string lights.

Breakfast was homemade and tasty. Dean, chef and proprietor, was wonderful to chat with, as were the other guests along the huge, communal table adorned with a bowl of painted rocks with inspirational words like "love" and "dream".

My husband and I agreed this place was PERFECT for either a family vacation or a romantic getaway. It is rare and special to find a place that is so suited to both. Especially for the price! A hotel would have cost as much, if not more, and could not possibly have offered the cozy, unique, and warm atmosphere of the Wilderness Lodge.

I honestly had a hard time leaving. I can't wait to go back! We are hoping to get family and friends on board to make this vacation an annual tradition.

If you want to get out of the mainstream & be relaxed, this is the place. Check everything at the door & have a good time. There is a really slow, wonderful situation here.

My room was perfect. I met people I didn't know. Sharing is not optional.

Breakfasts are wonderful. Take at least 2 hours and look at everything contained inside.

Room Tip: this is a RUSTIC experience relax

Very sweet spot, with wonderful hot springs just steps away from the very cool old converted schoolhouse lodge. Very kind hosts, lovely breakfasts included, very reasonable rates. Fabulous kitchen and a super-long table for communal meals, cozy bedrooms with lots of beds and extra blankets. I had a wonderful time.

A group of 11 college students, three teachers, and one dog spent an incredible weekend at the Wilderness Lodge in Gila Hot Springs. We were delighted by the hospitality, the food, the kitchen, the location (great and easy access to the cliff dwellings and hiking), and the space to retreat and close a semester together. This is our second time going, and we feel so welcomed, comfortable, and content that we will go back as often as we can. I cannot recommend the lodge, and the marvelous hosts, highly enough.

Dean and Jane are the best! The hot springs are perfect after a day hiking! This place is at the end of the road and magical. I am looking forward to my next visit with friends. Be sure to see the cliff dwellings.

Incredibly wonderful place to stay, with the hosts providing exceptional hospitality and kindness, in the most beautiful setting imaginable. The hot springs hit the spot before or after a day or partial day on the trail. Incredible homemade food. One of the best places i've ever spent a weekend, and my heart aches to go back.

Room Tip: All the rooms and beds are great!
