We were in Brooklyn for my daughter's wedding. The hotel Gregory was fine but the staff is what made our experience the best. The people at the front desk were always helpful and friendly. They helped us keep up with other members of our group, always seemed happy to see us, and were happy to help us with whatever we needed. (They even let us use the breakfast area to do the wedding flowers.) When we needed something like a steamer for the girls wrinkled dresses, the staff got on the phone and looked around for us. The hot breakfast was not the greatest. We were able to make our own fresh waffles but there was only syrup or butter to top them with. The institutional type egg patties and sausage were not the greatest and there were no other hot offerings. Fresh fruit consisted of apples and oranges. The bagels, however, were great. One morning when I got to breakfast early, they were still warm from the bakery! The hotel was 2 short blocks from the subway station which made it easy for family and friends to take in the sites of Brooklyn and Manhattan whenever the opportunity was there. There was also a wide variety of restaurants close enough that even the senior citizens in our party were able to walk to them.

The good news is that this hotel is very close to the subway and the staff is very friendsly and very helpful. But that's the only good news. This is an old hotel, in need of repair and upgrade. They offer breakfast, they say, but the breakfast is mediocre at best with the same fare every day. It doesn't change at all. Rates are ridiculously high considering what's offered and my personal favorite was the $60 "early check-in" fee. If you have any other choice, I'd give this one a pass.

Outside is attractive, and in a fairly decent and quiet neighborhood (for Brooklyn). It's above a subway line. To me it wasn't loud, just sounded like far off thunder, but it woke up my husband. Staff is friendly. However, we arrived well after check-in and were told a clean room wasn't ready. We were also told that PARKING IS LIMITED and FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED. I say this in caps because neither their website, hotel listings or hotel reviews say this. Perhaps I should just know it, based on how things work in NY. Be prepared to find your own street parking, possibly not very close. Room itself was very basic and fairly small. It seemed clean, but the carpet I'm sure could have used a shampoo (do hotels ever do this?). There was a small round table with two chairs (one stained), and a small dresser in the corner with a tv, plus the two double beds and a nightstand. Window got natural light, but looked out to the windows of the other half of hotel. Curtains block out the light quite well. In both beds we found a piece of hair, I assume the maid's. I also found a hair on the toilet tank. Other people's hair grosses me out. The bed linens otherwise seemed clean. The bathroom seemed clean (except the one hair on the toilet), and it seemed newly refinished. The shower was very clean. Oh, the shower. It was large (no tub) with a glass sliding door and large size shower head (too high for me to reach). Only one small shelf inside for putting anything on. But it was like taking a shower under a leaky hose. No water pressure. And what you always run into - 3 bath towels in the bathroom for a family of four. Light in the ceiling had no cover on it and you could see up into the ceiling to the wires, etc. I found the bed to not be comfortable - it was very firm. No pillow tops here. The A/C unit ran all night and we all woke up with stuffy noses. This happens all the time when we travel - I don't think hotels ever clean out their heating/AC units and so they blast bacteria/dust out at you all night. In room there was a tiny coffee machine, tv, safe, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. No fridge or microwave. There was a small bump out in the wall across from the closet - some genious had hung a full-length mirror on the wall so that most of it was on the flat wall, but one side overlapped the bump out. Breakfast was fine - the basics we usually expect including the DIY waffle maker. Breakfast area clean and seemed well stocked, but is small. I would say less than 10 tables definitely. One place we stayed included breakfast, but it turned out to be Dunkin Donuts plopped on a meeting room table, so anything more than that and we're happy. And if you're looking for a hotel where you can hang out in a big, fancy lobby, this is not the place. All in all, I wish the price had been less for all the things we didn't get. I guess I'm behind the times on how much things cost, but to me this stay wasn't worth over $200 considering the small room, lack of amenities and parking. However, location was the most important factor in our choice and I guess it was worth it for that. I do have to say that aside from the subway (which didn't bother me) and the running AC, room 303 was quiet and that's also very important to us. There were no street noises, no maids in the hall very early, no slamming doors late at night or early morning, no noise from the neighbors. In fact, I don't even know if anyone was in the rooms next door to us. We did not notice any smells of smoke, and I'm very sensitive to that.

Staff could not be nicer or more accommodating. Have always heard New Yorkers were standoffish and rude but found these folks to be warm and almost "Southern" in how they treat others.

This hotel is old but has obviously been remodeled. Bathroom was spotless and the bed comfortable. Carpet was badly stained and in need of a very good scrubbing. Air conditioner was quiet and functioned well, breakfast was average.

For the price paid in the greater New York City area it is probably the best available for the price.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are the largest. Don't know if there is a premium for them.

The check-in/check-out staff was wonderful; the breakfast staff was not. Overall, the room was clean, but the carpets were stained. The location is super convenient for those who stay in Bayridge or want easy access to the Battery tunnel and the Verrazano Bridge.

The hotel lacks amenities and parking for hotel residence. The breakfast space is too small. The restaurant should be shut down and the breakfast space expanded and a fitness center added. Room service staff are very lazy and slow. Don't do a thorough job of cleaning.
