I must begin saying my Easter Weekend stay at The Gregory was a delightful experience. But much of that satisfaction can be attributed by the fact we were visiting the super high priced NYC. If The Gregory was located in Baltimore or most other American cities I would have rated it an average stay.
Pro's-
Although our standard room with double beds was on the small side it was not a factor because the room was clean and comfortable.
The bathroom was spotless and the plumbing worked perfectly and we had plenty of hot water for showering.
The employess were friendly and helpful. One exception is documented in the Cons section.
Although far removed from downtown Manhattan the R Line Subway station was one block away and it took us to where we wanted to go without having to change trains. That was the Macy's store on 34th St & 6th Ave. Manhattan.
Although the hotel has no restaurant you can find all varieties of gourmet eateries within a short walk. We were most happy with Rocco's Pizzeria on 79th & 5th Ave. for an informal dinner and Areo's Italian Restaurant on 84th & 3rd Ave. for fancy.
Places for nightlife were also in abundance and you felt safe walking on the streets of Bay Ridge. It is a very quaint little section of the city.
The Cons--Not Many
When we arrived the Front Desk clerk was on the telephone and took three other calls before acknowledging our presence. And she was very curt when she did talk to us. But in her defense a front Desk clerk should have one primary job and that is checking in and out your customers. She was taking calls and booking reservations for future customers. That should be done by someone else if it impedes the processing of your existing patrons.
The hotel is old and the lighting needs to be improved. However the dimness did not hide dust or dirt or fingerprints. The place is spotless throughout.
They should freshen the air as it had the faint smell of mustiness
in the lobby and hallways. That situation was not present in the room.
I would book it again at the Internet or Expedia rates but would be wary of staying there at the regular rates they quote when you call on the Front Desk telephone.
The continental breakfast offering is less than adequate from what other locations offer.
All in all it was a pleasant experience and I would return when visiting NYC!
