This was is one of the most transporting experiences I have had in a restaurant. It is the perfect place for a romantic date with someone very, very special. The restaurant is beautifully designed and constructed to provide an intimate, quiet, and entirely soothing atmosphere. we were shown through a softly lit labyrinthine pathway of stone that is flanked by elegant bamboo until we came to our own room that was be curtained off for complete privacy (some rooms have mirrored walls; some reeds -- all are inviting). Our waitress was extremely polite, but naturally so without any forced affectations -- and genuinely friendly, She was also highly knowledgeable about the cuisine and the extensive selection of saki -- and all of her suggestions were excellent. Get used to the curtain being parted and closed, always with a polite "excuse me" in Japanese. It is part of the charm. And be sure to take a trip to the lavatories which are nicely appointed and bespeak the cleanliness that is radiated throughout this respite from the world.
The Japanese dishes are exquisitely prepared, and we sampled many. I can't remember all the names as my partner did an superb job of ordering for us. But if I am not mistaken the black cod was delicious as was the rocksalt chicken and the chicken meatballs, which were served on bamboo. Salads and noodles were all wonderful accompaniments to the main dishes. For dessert, we shared the grapefruit agar gelee, which was as refreshing as promised. And if you like saki, you will be in heaven. Again, trust your waitress to recommend just what you want in this department -- ours was uncanny.
Along with MY MOON, this is one of Williamsburg's greatest dining experiences -- incredible in all respects!
