Lets see, where to start.
I was looking for a cheap place to spend one night in New York. After much research, this was it. $45/night (June 2009 price). The only place cheaper would have been an 8 beds in a room, youth hostel!
There are 4 or 5 YMCA in the NYC area, most of them were $60/night. I believe this was cheaper because it’s a little out of the way compared to the others.
The good I can say: well the price; it was clean; the staff at the front desk were as nice as can be; and access to the YMCA amenities (pool, gym etc)
The bad: very dated, worn out furniture/worn out rooms; shared bathroom; no air conditioning (but there is a fan); the TV may no longer work??? (due to the recent transition to digital TV); a neighborhood some may be put off by.
Coming from JFK airport – The Airtrain to Jamaica ($5) then the “J” line subway from Jamaica to the Norwood stop ($2 a ride or get a MTA travel card good for unlimited rides for x number of days). Then it is an 8 min walk to the YMCA. It felt safe to walk in the daytime, however at night (say after 10 pm), I would have been a little more weary. There is a bus (the 56) that would let one off right in front of the YMCA. Might be safer to use that at night.
Coming from La Gardia airport - the Q33 bus to Jackson Heights, then the “E” subway to Jamaica, then the “J” line subway from Jamaica to the Norwood stop.
Coming from Newark airport - a shuttle bus to Port Authority and then the “J” line subway from Manhattan to the Norwood stop.
