“Cheap & Clean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

I wasn't familiar with Brooklyn before, but it was a lot of fun hanging out here. The staff was really nice and helpful and told me cool places to visit and eat. It was cleaner than the other hostel that I stayed at in Manhattan, and much cheaper too. Thanks guys!

This place has a certificate of occupancy as a 3 family house. The owners have put three and four bunk beds (6 to 8 people) in bedrooms meant for one or two people, which has created the overcrowded conditions mentioned in other reviews.

The other guests are friendly, so there's that, but overall you should know that this is not a legal establishment. If you Google the address (140 15th Street Brooklyn) you will see there is no sign or other outward indication that this is a hostel.

Firstly, I would like to convey to you a short introduction to the people you will be encountering while staying at this vicinity.
The "cleaning staff" are people who have previously inhabited this establishment and therefore no previous experience in hygiene and health standards.
The manager of the accommodation portrays a rather narcissistic undertone and a lack of interest in his guests.
The staff receive free accommodation in exchange for certain chores and are there on an irregular bases with no portrayal of even semi professionalism.
Secondly, the hostel is a house which has badly coordinated sleeping areas into an almost claustrophobic environment and merely divided into sections with up to thirty people per one restroom area.

During my recent short stay in NYC hostel, here is my experience:
The manager had us wake up because he had "renovations" to work on a specific morning. I think he should have refunded people for causing an inconvenience to his guests.
I think there are some really nice people that stay here but this isn't the right place to spend your money.
Update: The guy running this business had the audacity to kick me out of the hostel because I wrote a bad review online. He found out that it was me and showed no mercy. He won’t be running other business anytime soon if he keeps that attitude of a “professional” up.

This hostel is actually an apartment block with three floors. Each floor was its own apartment (with a living room/kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom). It's been converted into a hostel - which means the living area/kitchen of the upper two floors are now each a 10-bed dorm. The two bedrooms on each floor are 4-bed dorms and 6-bed dorms. Because there are only 3 bathrooms in the whole house, it gets a little bit crowded. We stayed on the third floor in the 4-bed dorm. This was great because you get some privacy from all the other 15 people on that floor you're staying with. However, you do have to share the bathrooms with everyone which means there's always a line. If you need to be somewhere at a certain time, I would suggest getting out of bed early to use the bathroom because by 8.30-9am all three bathrooms are always occupied. We had to basically be a spy from our room to watch when the bathrooms are free. Other than that, the hostel is in an extremely safe neighbourhood, and is very close to two subway stations. We walked around the neighbourhood (you can go to 9th street and walk up 5th avenue, there are lots of restaurants and bars) in all hours and we've felt really safe. The hostel is not extremely clean (especially the bathroom) but that's the kind of thing you get for a very crowded hostel. It's a great place to meet other travellers, though, and we have a lot of fun. People are very nice and friendly and are always watching movies in the common area downstairs. The host is very friendly and is extremely easy-going. We couldn't believe how lucky we were with the price (it was so cheap being so close to Manhattan). We had lots of fun here.

Room Tip: I don't think you really have a choice in picking rooms other than whether you want to be in a 4...

Is this place legal? 18 people for a bathroom, it's dirty, it's crowded, the wi-fi does not work well, the toilet was broken on the second morning, etc.. I think the owner fully takes advantage that hotels in NYC are expensive to fill its slums. I do not even want to imagine if there was a fire and we must evacuate ...

I really enjoyed my stay at NYC Hostel. The location is in a very safe and clean neighborhood. The host is very friendly and the location is only 2 blocks from the subway and lower Manhattan is only 20 mins away. I highly recommend this location.

New York is super expensive on the accommodation front but this hostel was located in Brooklyn on public transport, clean and cheap with good hot water and friendly staff and owners- would stay again-would recommend :)
