While I have not been to all the bagel joints in NYC, I have been to a lot and this one stands out from the crowd. The bagels were always warm; crusty on the outside and soft on the inside…my pick for best bagel in the city. The coffee was decent and the prices were reasonable. It’s a small place and you may not think much of it as you step down from the Montague Street sidewalk to enter, though it’s a treat. It was a great and unrefined true NYC gem, even with a small seating area in the front just below the sidewalk level.
It recent years it has gone through some renovations, and is catering more toward the influx of university students in the area, though is still worth it (just a bit more crowded). I would suggest taking your order to a bench on the nearby promenade where you can enjoy your food while taking in the skyline.
