“A change from the typical movie theater”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

I watched "The Great Gatsby" there.
We were trying to watch a movie and all movie theaters we went to were full. So we headed to BAM and not only did we get to watch a great movie, but we found a free exhibition on Africa, so we got to look around before heading to the movies.
I think it's worth checking the program because it's a change from the same-same let's watch a movie.

“Love the vibe at BAM's Harvey Theatre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

Visiting Brooklyn-NYC, staying in Fort Greene. Was attracted by John Turturo, appearing till June 9 2013 at the BAM (Ibsen's The Master Builder). While I was not satisfied with the production (Turturo, great on screen, did not seem spot-on as Solness, the master builder, and unlike other Ibsen plays - Hedda Gabbler, Doll's House, for example - the play, and this contemporary production, lacked clarity. Plus - my son's observation this time -- music was jarring and some bits played too much for laughs, not exactly befitting this somewhat allegorical play). HOWEVER, Harvey Theatre was a delight. From where we sat, orchestra, off to the side, the view and acoustics were perfect. Heard every word, saw every movement. It seemed, however, that all orchestra and upper orchestra seats would enjoy same. Seats were all angled towards the stage. The décor, worn, seemingly unretouched from previous centuries, was comforting, so old world. None of the glitz of newish, big theatres. So Brooklyn, perhaps? Loved it. Reason enough to visit Brooklyn and lovely Fort Greene again, disappointing production notwithstanding. Looking forward to future visits at the BAM.

“Children's Film Festival”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

We took my 2.5 yo daughter to the film festival last year and it was WONDERFUL! She loved it and since the movies were short she really was engaged with each one. The producers of the festival were a little out of touch with the age group when they had a Q&A with one of the movie directors after the 1 hour screening. The fact that 2-5 yo's sat for 1 hour was a miracle in its self. But I will go again! It was a great day out for the family.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

This theater is really cool, and shows great movies. Tickets are a bit pricey, but thats NY. Also great FREE music on fridays that is well worth showing up early for t get some food and a seat. FREE in New York is always impressive, but FREE, cool, and impressive is even better!
