Don't be fooled by worn industrial buildings and not-so-great new construction. This neighborhood still retains the creative energy that made it a target for gentrification. There is great food, unexpected shopping and an energy that is all but gone from Manhattan.
The rents are outrageously high. Too many buildings and people not enough transportation. Too many bars. But the streets especially the dark ones are the same as 20 years ago. You have to be aware of your environment. It's overcrowded, overpriced and pretentious.
Youre late to the party. The neighborhood has been overrun with commercialized crap, very expensive trendy restaurants suitable for some high school kids on a "nice date," and SWARMS of tourists from New Jersey. Blech...
When "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" was written, this neighborhood was for immigrant families. Now, it is cool and cooler with shops and restaurants galore. But no two are alike and there are no mega stores or reminders that the world has copied itself everywhere. Lovely to walk in and out on a fine afternoon and see the families are still there along with the hip people and the unique places. This IS Brooklyn..
Lotsa young hipsters looking cool in this cold October month. I went to a couple of cafes and restaurants and their service was just as expected.
