“A wonderful hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2014

This is a great place to stay. I have only good to report. The space and attention to detail are faultless. All the staff are cheerful, obliging and willing to help. The shuttle service is fantastic and an asset. I would definitely return. The immediate area is not pretty but it has a certain magic, feels safe and is very friendly. Having stayed in Manhattan, I would return to the delights of The Box House Hotel.

I left a review last year about this place and I couldn't believe how wonderful the hotel was. Nothing but outstanding things to say.

Well....I went back again this year (holding my breath) because I wanted to experience the same wonderfulness again. Sadly, that didn't happen. Here's why.

1. The place is clean, but not uber clean like last time. The place is showing signs of wear and tear (in such a short period of ). For example, the kitchen counter in the suite we booked was stained. They used butcher block wood instead of a product that could be cleaned. The stains detracted from the kitchen.

2. The bathroom was showing signs of mold in the shower. Little bits here and there in the grout. I hate mold. It is spring and if mold is showing now, what will happen in the humid summer months?

3. The front desk folks were not as eager to help. They were friendly and professional, but not as awesome as the first time we visited.

4. The vintage cabs were not in service when we were there. They told us that they have a "shuttle" instead. The cabs were parked out front, but not in use. Bummer!!

5. The prices have gone up (no surprise there).

Don't get me wrong, the hotel is still nice and probably better than most in Brooklyn. With a little more attention to detail and resuming all the things they did when they first started, it can get back to its original glory. You can't live in the past and live off good reviews of the past - you must continue to provide consistently good service. This is what separates the good from the great. Hopefully the Box House will strive to be great.

Dear Bev N,

Thank you for your continued loyalty as a returning guest at The Box House Hotel. We take pride in our hotel and nothing is as gratifying as seeing a familiar face coming back through our doors for a return visit. I would like to thank you for your critique of your most recent stay with us. The feedback of our guests is an integral part of our success as we strive to provide the absolute best experience. Even though it is often very difficult to recreate the allure of the first time someone experiences something wonderful and special, this is indeed the challenge that we are now met with. We apologize if we could not recreate the magic of your first stay but I want to assure you that we have examined each one of your points in order to strive to be the best.

As far as the pricing is concerned, it is true that our prices fluctuate with the seasons but we did check your previous reservation from almost exactly one year earlier and you rate was exactly the same. As for the vintage cabs it is a shame you were not able to enjoy them on your last visit but I want to assure you they are still in service, and the only time we do not offer rides in them is when the weather does not permit, as they are vintage vehicles and safety of the guests is our top priority. This is why we now also offer a shuttle service in a brand new BMW X5 with all-wheel drive to handle the rain, sleet, or snow. While I am glad that you had an “awesome” experience with our Front Desk staff on your first visit, I am sorry on the 2nd trip the opportunity didn’t present itself for our team to go the extra mile. I can assure you all of our original staff are still here and hopefully on your next visit that awesomeness will shine as bright as your first visit.

On a final note, we examined the loft you stayed in on your last visit and did find a small 2" discoloring of the grout in the bathroom tile. I want to assure you that it was not mold and we made the necessary repair to the grout. The butcher block in the kitchen is beginning to darken from the ultraviolet radiation. However, this is not a stain but a natural weathering of an eco-friendly material.

Once again I would like to thank you for your patronage. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to The Box House Hotel in the future and at which time we can exceed all of your expectations and then some.

Sincerely,

The Box House Hotel

We recently spent three nights in the quirky, hip Box House, a place unlike any other hotel we've visited. Made of an old door factory in a semi-industrial neighborhood, the Box has strange architectural features, random books on end tables and a couple of spiffy old Checker taxicabs out in front. They're available for short trips around the trendy Greenpoint streets. The people who work here are very congenial, from the attentive doorman to the good humored desk clerks. We stayed in a room with an unusual pullout sofa that converted to a very comfy bed. The kitchen was well-equipped; shower stall was fitted with stationary tubes of soap and hair product. Our room had a nice patio whose view was partially obscured, but we could still see the tips of the Empire State and the Chrysler building. We enjoyed our stay and will likely return to the Box House.

Staff very friendly. Rooms carefully fornished. Very good position if you want to visit Manhattan easily. With a short minute walk you can get at the first tube station that in two stops will take you to Grand Central.

Have just returned from 6 nights stay at the Box House Hotel - what a find! All the reviews that I read beforehand were so true. The staff were friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We were 5 in the room and the room was spacious with a fully fitted kitchen and everything that you could need. The room was immaculate and beautifully and artistically decorated. Easy access to Manhattan via the 7 line - 2 stops to Time Square and Williamsburg/Brooklyn are great areas to wander around. Good places to eat and even ordered 2 takeaways that were delivered to the door - so easy!
We liked living amongst the real people of New York rather than Manhattan. Great taxi service that was free and so many recommendations from the staff for us to do everyday. Cant say enough about the whole experience.

Room Tip: There was no restaurant but that was no problem at all. We had 5 in our room and felt fine. Rooms ar...

Rooms are spacious and clean. The decor is original and whimsical. The kitchen was well equipped and they provided all the extra touches ( complementary tea bags, coffee, and a bar of chocolate, etc.)
The staff are very helpful, we appreciated the complementary taxi service to nearby locations. It's a very convenient location if you'd like to visit Brooklyn or even to go into Manhattan, etc. We would heartily recommend staying here; it's a lovely hotel
If you're not familiar with the neighborhood, be aware that it's a bit dodgy, but we felt relatively safe. You'll find a mix of interesting restaurants and bars mixed in with seedy looking establishments.

The Box House is such a cool warehouse-type building located at the northern tip of Greenpoint. It's within walking distance of Williamsburg and the G Train. Now, if you want a place on a fancy street, this isn't it - but hey, it's Brooklyn. The hotel itself is very well maintained and lovely. The hotel room was really a modern apartment with a full kitchen and two flat screens. Our room had no windows, but 3 huge skylights and was VERY quiet. The bed was a bit on the firm side for my taste, but the quality was fine. Feather pillows are furnished but they have regular pillows if you ask. The other bed was a really nice fold-out couch that was quite comfortable. The room and common areas were extremely clean and all of the staff were simply amazing, especially Joshua; they were genuinely friendly, caring, accommodating and helpful! Loved it.

Room Tip: Hotel is beside the Pulanski Bridge (which is pedestrian/bike friendly with a nice Manhattan view...
