“A haven in Brooklyn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

The Box House Hotel exceeded our expectations...an apartment with hotel staffing. An excellent combination. We had a room with noisy pipes the first couple of nights and after recording it for staff to hear, had a room change. Our second room was much bigger, though we were satisfied with the first. Everything was so clean, so convenient, and the staff so helpful. A special thank you to Singh and the other driver whose name we did not get unfortunately, who took us to the train station, to an organic supermarket and to the ferry terminal (as well as a pick up service). Excellent service in those lovely old taxis. We thoroughly enjoyed The Box House and will be back. We have recommended it to friends who are travelling to NYC soon.

Room Tip: Rooms on the inner corridor appear larger. Room 12 is quite small. But the two level rooms look a...

after furiously looking on the internet for a last minute hotel to stay in while working in New York at the last minute i came across the box house hotel... and wow I'm so glad i did. as a female traveling solo i really wanted to find somewhere comfortable and safe and also an oasis from coming home after a full day working - the box house hotel was that and then some!!

here's a few things to know if you're considering staying here:

- the hotel is EXACTLY as it looks in the picture - the apartment was absolutely spotless & in amazing condition. i actually wondered if i was the first person to stay in that room!

- the staff are so lovely and helpful at all times.

- the kitchen has everything you need should you chose not to eat out every night.

- theres also a free taxi service to drop you to places in the local area (bonus!)

i've got nothing but the highest praise for this place and i've stayed in ALOT of hotels so thats saying something!!

after an intense week working staying here made it so much easier and i'd come back and stay in a heartbeat.

- you get 10 times more for you're money here than staying in an average hotel

Everything about this hotel was FANTASTIC...from the accommodations, the service, and the location. The room was spacious, nicely appointed, and with an above-par kitchen. A laundry room was directly across the hall from the room, and came in handy after our almost weeklong stay. The staff was exceptional...the desk staff offered suggestions, directions, & information; the drivers were always accessible & personable; and the housekeeping staff (though I didn't see them & daily housekeeping was NOT advertised), always replaced towels & tidied the room.
Access to the Metro was either a scenic walk across the Pulaski bridge with a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline, or a free ride in one of the vintage cabs owned & operated by The Box House Hotel. Also, a few blocks away is a water taxi stop that provided an alternate AND scenic mode of transportation. We rode from Wall Street all the way to Manhattan for $4/ person. Really nice on a pretty day!!!
Information about neighborhood restaurants was provided, as well as maps and other area attractions.
I would absolutely go back!

I was born and raised in Brooklyn. My parents were born and raised in Brooklyn. I am now in my fifties, and can say with 100% certainty that I never expected to use the words "trendy" and "Greenpoint" in the same sentence, but here we are. Brooklyn has undergone a renaissance, and neighborhoods like Greenpoint, once a solid blue collar, Polish area have become ultra hip. The good news is the neighborhood has a mix of upscale restaurants and bars, as well as authentic ethnic food. If you want fantastic pierogis, this is the place. The great news is that there are two subway lines, located equidistant from the hotel, and both a short walk. Taking the #7 train is a double treat. It gets you into midtown Manhattan in about five minutes. To get there, you walk over the Pulaski Bridge to the station and get phenomenal views of the Manhattan skyline for free. So, the Box House...the rooms are huge by New York City standards, and very reasonably priced. That makes it a perfect option for families. They all come with complete kitchens, another money saving feature. The staff is very friendly and efficient. It feels more like your own apartment than a hotel. We had a duplex loft. A queen sized bed was upstairs in the loft, and there was a sleep sofa downstairs. Word of caution...if you need to get up during the night to use the bathroom, its downstairs, so be prepared to walk down the steps. Otherwise, get the one story suite. For a real treat, get a suite with a terrace and a view of the skyline. Its beautiful. The rooms are all spotlessly clean and whimsically decorated. The hotel has eliminated the little bottles of shampoo and conditioner, opting for dispensers in the shower. I like that idea because its better for the environment, but there's no body lotion, so if you use the stuff, BYO. Also, there is no traditional maid service, so if you want your bed made you are on your own. They do pick up the trash and change towels if needed. Linens are changed every three days. There is a nice gym with a sauna, but no bar or restaurant. This isn't really a problem, because the main street in the neighborhood, Manhattan Ave., is just down the block and has plenty of bars, pizza places, restaurants, etc. The hotel has refurbished some vintage NYC Checker Cabs, and offers free shuttle service to both subway stops if you don't want to walk. Also, the neighborhood has plenty of free on street parking.

If you are visiting New York for the first time and want to do the "Big Apple, City that Never Sleeps" thing, don't stay here. Stay in midtown or Times Square. This neighborhood gets pretty quiet at night, but if you want the perfect mix of fun, space, convenience and value there is no better choice than The Box House. We go home to Brooklyn often, and will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Get a large loft suite if you are a family or large group. Definitely go for the skyline view.

We had planned the trip to NY a while back and still decided to go ahead despite Sandy. Good news was that almost everything was back to normal at the hotel and around the parts of the city we visited.

Overall had a great stay and would definitely go back.

Goods:
- amazing room! we had a loft, super funky with a view of manhattan skyline
- 10 min walk to subway, 1 stop from grand central
- shuttle service in a retro cab to other, slightly further subway lines (L train)
- wifi worked great everywhere!
- great service, very friendly. We had an issue in the bathroom and it was fixed right away
- parking free & plentiful right outside

For those complaining about the noise. I would say its a huge city, what do you expect?! Yes a bit noisy but nothing that prevented me from sleeping

Not so goods
- not a traditional hotel. If you want something with a bar, resto etc - wont find it here
- while I quite enjoyed the location and the hotel recommended an awesome craft beer bar 5 min away there isn't a huge abundance of places super closeby.

Lastly be careful with cabs - while it's in Brooklyn it's much closer to Long Island City so need to be specific about taking the Queensboro bridge from Manhattan otherwise you get taken for a ride - literally!

Normally, when I travel whether for business or pleasure, I try to seek out “different” experiences. Also, when I travel alone, as a woman, comfort, safety, and a pampered environment are all criteria on my radar. I went to NY for a short business trip last week and was a little concerned because of the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. Apparently, like many other businesses in the area, The Box House Hotel also suffered some damage during one of the worst storms that has ever hit NY. Boy, was I surprised!

The management and staff must have moved mountains because the hotel sparkled like a well-polished gem! I was told that a few rooms were still out of commission and the heat was still not on in the lobby. I am sure that they will very quickly be back to 100% Aside from that, the hotel was as beautiful as the pics on the web site. My room was in essence, like an apartment – definitely a home away from home. High ceilings, a mix of modern and antique furnishings with original art. The mattress was of a better quality than I have had in 5* hotels. It included a full kitchen. It was absolutely spotless. I made a point of seeking out the housekeeper to commend her. There is also a fully equipped gym with sauna and steam showers. They thought of everything!

The staff was first rate – friendly and helpful. They provided me with info about the area and a map/guide of local cafes and restaurants. Their unrelenting focus on service really creates an environment that is completely different from the world you step out of as a traveler. All within the context of an intimate boutique hotel. I commend the management for creating a new and satisfying travel experience. I will be staying here on all future trips to NY.

My daughter read about the Box House Hotel on tripadvisor, it was everything and more than I expected! The taxi service with in a mile from hotel is free when you use their mint condition classic taxi's. Sweet. And the 10 min. walk to subway station was great way to start our day. One night we had pizza delivered from a local restaurant, it was so good that the next night we took the "free" taxi and ate there! Janica at the front desk took very good care of us.. Ours thoughts and prayers are with all in that area since the hurricane struck....Cat from St Louis, Mo.

Room Tip: street lights were bright so I was glad I brought eye shades...
