“Pastrami Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

If your idea of fine dining extends to boiled smoked beef with pickle you'll love mile end.
The restaurant is tiny and sits no more than 20. When we visited we thought the staff to diner ratio around 1:1. But the boiled smoked beef is delicious and the staff friendly and efficient despite the pressure on space. I had a smoked beef sandwich with pickles, my companion had the Poutine with beef: that is fries + gravy + cheese + smoked meat in the same dish and she loved it. The Canadians are very fond of this dish - it's an acquired taste for others.
The whole thing - the food, the service, the uncomfortable wooden benches - is excellent and a great experience on a wet Sunday lunchtime in Brooklyn.

“Everything perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

I've been living in New York for 4 months and this is my favorite place so far! People are so kind, and the food is excellent. It's a Kasher deli which serves traditional kasher dishes with a touch of novelty. I had the potato and green pea pierogie, oriental-style duck and cheese cake, everything was more than perfect! I will get back to this place to try all the menu items, I've been really delighted. Prices are reasonable. Restaurant is tiny, and tables are to share. Portions are not that huge, but the quality makes up for quantity.

“Montreal food heaven-haven in New York”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

I crave the delectable, unique and legendary smoked meat ("pastrami") and bagels served in Montreal restaurants, but have never found a decent replica in Boston, New York, Washington, Florida, Texas, California, Alaska, Hawaii or anywhere else in the world. We hit the mother lode this weekend and conclude that Montreal has insurmountable competition. Mile End has the VERY BEST SMOKED MEAT I HAVE EVER EATEN, better than any establishment in Montreal, or New York, or anywhere else for that matter. The smoked meat is so tender, so infused with a delectable array of spices, so utterly delicious, that a filet with Bernaise Sauce or any other beef preparation pales by comparison. While waiting for the kitchen to prepare our take-out order, we sampled their cheese bagels, St. Viateur bagels - all delicious. Other items on their menu (made in-house) appear of equal high quality and in interesting combinations (e.g. a smoked meat hamburger). A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, another 1.3 mile walk gets you to their tiny door front and eating space on Hoyt Street. Apparently founded by two ex-McGill graduates (American) who craved Montreal smoked meat in New York, they re-created the Canadian fare, but at quality, tenderness and taste that surpasses the progenitors. I do not know their business model - the current location is a tiny, spartan space that barely qualifies as a restaurant and is not comfortable for a leisurely meal. New Yorkers! demand that they expand to a location in Manhattan! Nation-wide franchises would be a welcome respite from the mundane, greasy national food chain restaurants. They cater/food delivery to Manhattan, which I would use for a future event (8 person minimum).

“Excellent smoked brisket poutine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

I saw this place on one of the travel/food channels and had to try it. It did not disapppoint. The smoked meat poutine was delicious, washed down with a Brooklyn Lager. The place is small, but we were there on a Saturday at lunchtime and sat at the counter right away; there wasn't much of line for the tables either. One caveat: my wife is vegan. The website showed a grilled vegetable item that would have been perfect, but apparently that is only sold at their Manhatten restaurant. You have to be a meat lover to really enjoy this place. Big thumbs up!

“A deli that surprises”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

This was our first meal at Mile End and our lunch choices did not disappoint. It really is deli food with a delicious twist.
We were a little late - about 2pm - so some menu items were already sold out - we chose the smoked meat sandwich, which was a cured and smoked meat on rye and the lamb sausage on a roll with slaw and pickle. Although not generally a fan of smoked meat, this offering had a wonderful flavour as did the lamb sausage.
We were so impressed by the quality that we went for dessert - the house made cheesecake. What a cheesecake!! So creamy smooth in texture that we took another piece to eat at home.
Altogether this was a delightful find and we were sad only to be able to get there once during our trip to New York.
