“Great resturants and bars”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

I could eat out everynight here. There are loads of little resturants and bars. Some cute and some not so, but always something going on!

“Lovely part of Brooklyn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

We had a copy of a literary review from one of the New York magazines (thanks to my cousin for that!) which detailed a walking tour around Brooklyn Heights, Cobble |Hill and on to Boerum Hill. So we set off and did most of it. Lovely area, beautiful houses. We finished up in Bar Tabac on the corner of Smith Street and Dean Street. It was a great find. Lovely beers to try and we had a smashing lunch too. Smith street area was busy and vibrant with lots of independent stores. A great part of Brooklyn and worth a visit when on holiday.

“Come to visit and to eat.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

Smith Street, from 1st Place all the way to Atlantic Avenue, is a great place to visit and to eat. There are brand new restaurants opening every few months BUT the real, well established places are still here, too. Long before all the Yippsters, Hipters, Yuppies and Artsey Fartsy groups came along, Smith Street was a Blue Collar, Working Class neighborhood.
There are some very good newer places and some fantastic Old World places. Do your research - - - Old or New: if the restaurant is owned by anyone who had a show on The Food Network, don't go. You're paying for thier name NOT good food.
If the owner of the Restaurant or Bar has a 2nd, 3rd or 4th business in the area - DON'T Go. You have just found a place interested in your money for a 1 shot deal, NOT your continued business. (In other words, poor food and Over Priced drinks - - - YES, a tourist trap)
But if you find a place that has been there, under the same ownership, for 20+ years, then you've found a gem.
Red Rose was the 1st real restaurant to open on Smith Street over 25 years ago. Casa Rosa & Sam's have both been open for 25 to 30 years, but you'll find those places on Court Street NOT Smith Street.
As far as the NON- eating/drinking things to do, Smith Street is a great place for little boutiques featuring clothing & jewlery.
Summary - to shop, go to the new artsey places. To Eat - stick to the old established places.

“Good, but it use to be nicer (i.e. hipster ruin everything)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

I am a native Brooklynite - yes we do exit! And have been visiting (and eventually moved to) Carroll Gardens for over 20 year (man I feel old). I have seen Smith Street go through many make-overs, from being "sketchy" in the '80 and early '90s to local in the late '90s early '00 to the present when it's mostly hipster/yuppies and corporate filled. Still a lot of good locally owned restaurants, even though a lot of the locally owned stores have closed their doors and been replaced by corporation (i.e., American Apparel, Starbucks, etc). But I guess that's the story with most of Brooklyn, especially the Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill area. Still a good place to visit if you're in Brooklyn and looking for a good place to eat. Not as hipster filled as Williamsburg, not as yuppie filled as Park Slope.

“Lots of unique, locally-owned boutiques”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2012

Many locally owned-and-operated clothing, furnishing, & knickknack stores, as well as delectable eateries abound on Brooklyn's Smith St. It's definitely worth the quick F-train ride from Manhattan. Bonus: also check out Carroll Gardens cinema one block over for the best in independent screen gems & big budget flicks for less-than-Manhattan prices.
