“Popular, popular well into the night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

We three arrived late 9:45 weekday night for one of their pizza fixes. After a short wait we were escorted through the length of their serving rooms passing by the hectic kitchen.

No shortage of buzz and people enjoying their meals and one another. Pizzas were good but a bit bland in our collective estimation.

Would happily return to sample other menu items.

“A nice choice for a date... less so for a fussy child!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

We were highly recommended this place as "an authentic Italian" by our hosts when staying in Brooklyn for a week with our 3 year old, and tried it on our first night. Our little one is very fussy when it comes to food but usually does well with Italian as she loves pasta, olives, breadsticks, etc. so thought we'd do fairly well by her!

Firstly, its design and atmosphere is lovely - quite "hip" and "cool" in its approach, and as we came in, I thought perhaps they wouldn't be kid-friendly but was delighted to see them bring her a drawing sheet and colouring pencils to the table. We were seated out the back (we were given the choice of outside or inside) in a small open air courtyard, packed full of tables and chairs under canopy umbrellas, surrounded by trees and vines, and some nice jazz playing in the background. It felt relaxed and intimate outside, perhaps a good choice for a first date, as evidenced by the amount of couples around us (though there were certainly groups and families there also).

They had a fairly good menu, not a very wide choice (a lot more seafood options than expected), but certainly had pizzas, pastas and other items like salads, meats, etc. Kid choices weren't impressive - I guess most kids like pizzas so it wouldn't be a problem for many - but for our difficult child, it was a challenge to get some plain pasta for her. The waitress recommended that she should have pasta in butter or oil as it's too dry without, but we explained that is exactly how she eats it, so she said she'd get it with the tiniest drizzle of oil on it. When it came, it was a gigantic portion of pasta practically drowned in butter and of course, being the way she is, she wouldn't eat it so we had to send it back with a reiteration of our instructions. They eventually replaced it with plain pasta (she had to wait ages as it was made fresh), but it was so late by then and the portion was so overwhelming for her, she struggled to eat well, which massively dampened the experience for us.

Of course I felt bad that we came across as quite trying customers, but it was that or our child not eating, as there were no other options available to her. We were charged full price for her pasta as a main meal (hard to dispute when they kindly cooked her 2 fresh batches specially!), but I was still somewhat surprised that firstly, they didn't follow our directions in the first place and secondly, there didn't seem to have any flexibility to provide a child's meal choice or portions. It just wasn't that kind of place I guess. When we explained to the waitress why she wouldn't eat the pasta in butter sauce, she basically shrugged and walked away - no sense of wanting to help or do what she could to keep our child happy, which I was very disappointed by.
We also had to specifically ask for a bread basket which we were not given on arrival, unlike the other tables around us.

As for the food that my husband and I ate (somewhat stressfully!), the food was very fresh, all made from scratch you could tell, and certainly felt authentic - my pizza was delicious and really did remind me of some meals we savoured on our honeymoon in Italy, which was lovely. But overall, we found the food to be on the expensive side, and the staff to be unattentive and inflexible on food choices and not terribly nice about it, which is very disappointing to see when meals are all made to order, and in an industry where customer service makes or breaks the experience for a customer.

if I were to go again, it would be for a date and certainly without my fussy child :( However, as much as we love Italian, I think would seek another one next time for better service and not such a huge bill for a meal that wasn't enjoyed. If your kids are older and can eat off an adult menu, you'll be fine. We're just not there yet!!

“Did not live up to the hype”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

Our group visited Saraghina while staying in Brooklyn for the week. It was an easy walk from our brownstone and we had heard such great things we decided to give it a try. I must say I was somewhat disappointed. We were seated in a back room that seriously was like a sauna. It was so hot it was hard to enjoy our meal at all. The pizza is okay but there are absolutely no changes or substitutions allowed. I find this strange since each is made to order. Saraghina is overpriced for what you get and the servers could use a refresher course in good customer service.

“Super solid pies, nice salad, great desserts in funky off the beaten track hood”

Have been twice. Really good pizza, very informal, hipster vibe and reasonable prices. $24 corkage fee. Good for kids.
