“Quality and kid friendly - the french way blends it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2012

We recently did an adhoc reservation to have a dinner out with our baby. If you are looking for place that is kid friendly with high chair being readily available, forthcoming staff while serving great quality food, put General Greene on your shortlist.

We had s shared starter (pear & walnut salad), followed by steak a poivre (a point as ordered) and the days recommendation. All great and reasonably priced.

Certainly not the last time -- just make sure to reserve to avoid waiting....

“Hands-down, best breakfast. Ever.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2011

Organic eggs never tasted so good as those at The General Greene. This is a wonderful little find at the corner of DeKalb Ave and Clermont in Park Slope. Very low key place where all the effort is put into the quality of the food.

A caveat to dainty eaters: Breakfasts are HUGE The aforementioned eggs come with toast (a choice of artisanal filone or whole wheat) AND two sides. My husband opted for the slab bacon ("slab" is the optimal word here....this is the way bacon should be served). Oh, and he had the country fries. Oink. Oink.

I had to try the Nora Mills cheddar grits and I am here to tell you that if The General Greene relocated to Charleston or Savannah, their grits would put all the other grit restaurants out of business. So often grits are these runny affairs that are really just vehicles for butter. The General Greene's have real substance, they're not over-processed, and the Vermont cheddar they use adds just the right sharpness. (BTW, Nora Mills is a granary in Georgia. You'd think more Southerners would use their grits.)

To atone for the cheddar grits, I ordered kale with lemon and sea salt as my second side. Never had greens for breakfast before but, when in Brooklyn.... They were cooked perfectly. Very tasty.

The General Greene is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My husband has had dinner there and raves about the vegetable lasagna, where the lasagna "noodles" are actually layers of veggies.

If you need any other reason to venture off Manhattan Island and into Fort Greene, it's the ice cream here. The salted caramel sundae is a must-try.

The only downside is the service. Our waitperson for breakfast was lovely but service was S-L-O-W...despite the fact that only four tables were occupied.

“Fresh and funky”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2011

Had breakfast here on a Saturday morning with a party of 8 (4 kids, 4 adults). Arrived at 9:15 and were seated at a big comfortable table right away. Had we gotten here a half hour later we would have had to wait. The food was absolutely delicious - fresh, inventive and very nice portions. Our server was extremely attentive to us despite how busy it was and our food was served in good time.

“Fun, Casual dining with Friends...Prepare to Share!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

Seven of us dinned at the GG the other evening, we shared most of the apps, and hate two bottles of wine and dessert. The entire eve came to only around $40 per person. Really a great deal and a fun time. I would highly recommend The General Greene. I was only disappointed they were no longer offering their Chocolate Chip Cookies I had heard so much about. The place reminds me of a less expensive, more casual and nearly as yummy ABC KItchen. We made our reservation on Friday for 7 people that morning with no problem and the place was full. The risotto special was a huge hit and though some of us thought we had ordered too much food at the beginning, not a crumb was left.
