We got a promotional deal with Travelzoo which proved to be a bargain. Firstly the staff really are very friendly, polite and helpful. Unfortunately on our first night we were on Atlantic Ave where the 4 lanes of traffic never stopped and I got very little sleep but the next morning we were moved straight after I asked what else was available to a quiet room round the back of the hotel. The rooms are a good size, comfy beds, not my choice of pillow, large tv, safe. The continental breakfast was scrummy we took it back up to our room as we were up very early it starts at 6.30. We preferred the Bergen St subway,no problem getting into Manhattan, loved the buzz of Smith St, great bars, restaurants and shops. Would recommend!!

Stayed two nights for business in the area and rate was much better than nearby Marroitt. Location is okay (remember, this is Brooklyn, not Manhattan), hotel itself felt very safe, but walk from subway late at night was a little iffy. Hotel is really "Nu" as in new. Lobby bar still being stocked and not very welcoming. Staff very nice and helpful including the bar-tender.
Stark rooms, but huge and pleasant. No carpet except fluffy rug by bed. Workspace bar was a little uncomfortable for using laptop. Free WiFi. No tub, only shower. Comfy bed. Big HD TV (make sure you use the guide to find HD channels). Best radio ever in a room, but never could figure out how to turn on the alarm. Also has a safe in room (why don't more hotels do this). Free continental breakfast was okay, nothing to write home about. No coffee in room. Remember to check out the chalkboard in the bathroom.
PS - check out Subway stops on www.hopstop.com. Very helpful.

Being that this was my first trip to NYC, I was torn between staying at a hotel in Manhattan that was subpar or staying in a nice hotel in Brooklyn. I chose Brooklyn and am glad I did. The hotel is reasonably priced and oh so nice. The staff was super helpful and the rooms were meticulous. I'm currently working on the thank you note to management to commend them on their staff. They offer a complimentary breakfast which consists of 4-5 different types of crossiants and an assortment of fruits. They also serve Starbucks coffee, several different teas, cranberry juice and freshly squeezed orange juice. The place really blew my mind!

We stayed in the hotel in August and were very impressed overall. The room was a great size (as is the TV), the beds were comfy and the decor superb. We were provided with fresh towels cleaned daily. The hotel is very close to Jay Street Station from which you can easily reach any of the tourist hotspots, although there is plenty on offer within the local area. Despite being located across the road from a prison (!), this part of Brooklyn is very safe and has a lot to offer.
The staff at the hotel were always friendly and happy to help out with anything we needed.
The hotel offers its guests complimentary breakfast every morning, consisting of an array of pastries, fruit and juice. Again very impressive. Gym facilities and internet usage is also available free of charge.
There are a few minor negatives, however. The bedside lights in our room could only be switched on at the same time as the main light which is very illogical. Also, the room was not designed with privacy in mind- the wash basin is on full view from the rest of the room. A final point is we found the breakfast area quite small and in some instances we had to stand up as all the chairs had been taken. Could do with being expanded and developed into a proper bar. Did not see any 'light tapas' as mentioned on their site.
Overall, an impressive hotel for the price and I am confident that its initial minor faults will soon be improved upon.

  • Liked — Staff, room size & cleanliness, location
  • Disliked — Small, undeveloped 'bar' area, minor design flaws in room

This was one of the cheapest hotels I could find for Labor Day weekend and we weren't disappointed. The walk from the Shermerhorn station is less than scenic, about 3-4 blocks from the hotel and the looming razor wire of the jail across the street from the property. However, the hotel seems completely out of place in this neighborhood - super trendy, hip, cool. We needed an early check-in and were able to get in at 9am. The rooms are huge - we think bigger than our bedroom at home. All of the furnishings were very hip from the desk and LCD HDTV to the seating area and bathroom - heck, even the hallway with it's zig-zag-iness was hip. Free continental breakfast was tasty and the staff was very friendly. We walked down Smith to the Bergen line for most of the trip and this part of the neighborhood is a strict contrast to the Shermerhorn walk - the Smith/Bergen area is full of little boutiques and restaurants - very cool. A few notes for the hotel - the curtains are not room darkening, so you are showered with sunshine in the morning; there looked to be a ceiling leak in the bathroom (only visual damage, no running water); no AVEDA products or daily newspaper as described on websites.

  • Liked — Trendy location in trendy area, free wi-fi and free breakfast
  • Disliked — Curtains were not room darkening - it was very bright in the mornings
