i got the travelocity winter rate (around $70). we were in the old part. the room was nice and clean but there was very few space around the beds so we had difficulties placing our suitcases. i wouldn't pay the summer rate for that room, there is better places for $200. also, there was no fridge in the room. don't know about the rooms in the new part though. i've seen reception staff (day) making fun of elderly guests. found that very negative. also some of them were not motivated at all to help or answer questions. they preferred chatting with each other without being interrupted. night staff was much more competent and way friendlier. would stay there again if i got a good rate.

Nicely laid out room. Basic accommodations, could be cleaner.
Staid in the newer tower. Heard stories about the older tower parts that had not yet been updated. The price thru their web site was $78 a night, winter rates.

The young ladies at front desk were not much help, but the guys know about the town and such and were very helpful.

Red Lantern has good food & service, but spendy.

Hotel looks pretty grand considering the location. The Red Lantern restaurant serves some tasty dishes. Hotel offers a courtesy shuttle to many places around the city, so a rental car is not mandatory.
Front desk staff is pretty bad - clueless, unreliable. Other staff all right.
Room is clean but lacks some things you'd expect from a hotel that shoots for 3-4 star status - no fridge, no u-wave, always a wait to use the single internet PC w/ its shot printer.
Overall, not too bad, but not too great either. I guess I expected more.
Had a special rate, so was cheaper than most other local hotels, so I guess I got what I paid for.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The free shuttle was very handy, the restaurant served some good lunches and dinners but for a price
    • Disliked — The front desk folks were a let-down. misprogrammed keys, missed pick-ups etc etc

“A gem in a slow paced city”

I spent a business related week at the Westmark Fairbanks in September, 2007. Apparently it's much more expensive in the summer, but the ~$70 nightly rate during my stay was an absolute steal. Anywhere else, this would be a $150+ nightly hotel, easy. The tourist season ends in mid-September, so if you time it right you can get cheap accommodations without the crush of tourists, but still take advantage of the local attractions. Time it carefully though, because once the Riverboat Discovery, Denali and other places start closing up for the season, there's not much else to do.

The hotel recently underwent an expansion, so be sure to request a room in the new tower. They are larger and better decorated than the original rooms, and the new tower is the only part of the hotel with wireless internet access. The restaurant food was tasty, but a little pricey. Of course, everything in Fairbanks is a little pricey, so take that with a grain of salt. I thought I'd be clever and pick up some groceries at the local supermarket to cut costs... $8 for a 12 pack of Pepsi, $3+ for a basic loaf of bread, etc. So much for that idea!

The Westmark is located in downtown Fairbanks, within walking distance of the Chena River, a few stores, restaurants and a co-op. However, if you get jonesing for some fast food, or need something from the grocery, you'd better have a car. Renting a car will also allow you to venture out of Fairbanks to the town of North Pole, Denali National Park, or some of the other more distant attractions.

All in all, it was a very nice, clean, comfortable hotel that made my week in Fairbanks quite pleasant. Highly recommended.

    • Liked — The recently renovated rooms were top notch!
    • Disliked — The location really forces you to have vehicle access if you want to get out and about in the city

“Great hotel in downtown Fairbanks”

I stayed six nights at this hotel while in Fairbanks, AK for work. The hotel receiptionist gave me a complementary upgrade to a suite as a thank-you for staying so many nights.

The hotel was very, very comfortable. Clean, offered a complementary breakfast daily, and was convenient to downtown locations of Fairbanks.

The rooms were clean and have been recently upgraded. Beds are still the typical hotel beds---nothing modern/froofy here (i.e., they offered a standard blanket and matress, and the more traditional style bedspread--not the more current duvets, feather pillows, etc. that you more commonly see in mid to upper-grade hotels), but the beds were clean and comfortable.

I really liked the suite a great deal. The kitchenette was large, offered a microwave, mini-fridge, and a sink. No silverware or extra plates were available, so if you get take-out that needs heating up, make sure you ask the restaurant for extra plasticware/paper cups/plates, etc.

The hotel is within fair walking distance of restaurants and also has a restaurant in the hotel itself. If you like Thai food, you *must* try the Thai House restaurant that's within walking distance of the hotel. It has absolutely the best Thai Food I've ever had, anywhere in the US, bar none. Incredible flavors and a variety of dishes--and it's VERY clean.

The Westmark has a decent gift shop in the lobby of the hotel as well, so fi you needed to do some quick shopping while staying here, you have that option.

The service and cleanliness of this hotel really impressed me. They even offered hand-sanitizer stations in the lobby and hallways of the hotel, as it appears this hotel caters to the Alaska Cruise and Tour companies/customers.

As I was here on business, I found the hotel internet (wireless) to be adequate, though slightly slow at peak evening times. I did not have the opportunity to use any of the other business-center amenities.

I'd definitely stay here again if I were to return to Fairbanks.
A good, clean hotel with many modern updates and great service.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Cleanliness, spacious updated rooms, very good service.
    • Disliked — Updating blankets and mattresses would add further to the modern touch this hotel offers since it recently renovated the rooms.
