“No hot water!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

My wife an I stayed at this hotel based on the very positive reviews it got. on the nights of 31 July and 1 august 2013. However, on the first morning there was no hot water in the bathroom. We complained to the front desk and they apologised. Apparently this hotel is popular with coach parties and they had used all the hot water before we got up. The next morning it was no better even though we were up at 6.30! We met a fellow guest in the elevator who said he had no hot water either and it had been the same on a previous visit some months ago. Again we complained to the front desk and the apology was at best half-hearted. The clerk had obviously heard this many times before!
I have an email from a manager at the hotel acknowledging the problem who blamed the heating contractor who was sacked the morning we left the hotel and another contractor appointed. He thanked me for sharing my concerns with him! However, although I'm no expert if their water system isn't up to it, a change of maintenance contractor hardly seems likely to improve matters.
To be fair, the rest of the property is fine. Clean, comfortable and good wifi connections. The breakfast is $5 extra and adequate without being as good as some other hotels in this price bracket.
The Alpine Lodge is at the upper end of the price scale for Fairbanks and for this money they need to be at the top of their game 100% of the time and I'm afraid they are just not. Such a pity for an otherwise nice hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front otherwise you might be overlooking an unattractive parking lot at the re...

Great location by airport. Nicely appointed with a microwave and fridge. Wifi worked. Customer service is uneven, though. What surprised me was the shrug of a shoulder by the man at the registration desk at 4 am. "Sometimes people during the day don't follow protocol, he said." No apology. Just a shoulder shrug. The issue was that I had requested a shuttle to the airport (actually there is no shuttle; the hotel uses local cabs). But nobody had reserved my cab at 4 am. With a bit of further investigation, I heard from others that the hotel staff tended to be "disorganized." From my point of view, I would say the service is uneven. Clearly some folks were customer-service oriented. Proactive. Others weren't.

Room Tip: The building has 3 floors. I suggest a room on the top floor facing the trees.

I was pleasantly surprised at the condition of this hotel given the price and the comparables in Alaska. Conveniently located near both airport and the Discovery Paddlewheel, its easy to get to if you are coming/going from the airport. They have a shuttle and if its not available will substitute a cab.
For us at least, it was also surprisingly quiet. Rooms are large, beds are good.
I did hear one customer complaining about lack of hot water. We did not have the problem so possibly a localized issue.
The breakfast is not bad for the price, but is like most hotel breakfasts, mostly carbs. Would have been nice if included.
Bottom line: I would return and stay again if in the area.

Our tour group bunked here for two nights. We found our room a good size with ample room to move around for two people plus suitcases. An added bonus was chocolate chip cookies, fresh flowers and an Alaska state flag in the flower vase too! The room was clean as well.

At our first night's dinner meal we were greeted with a lei and hula dance--not expected in Alaska!
Our meal was a buffet offering which was adequate. We also had a buffet at breakfast too which was good.

We stayed for one night to be close to the Discovery Riverboat attraction. The hotel is quite new and the rooms are spacious and clean. It's just that accessories made you feel like you were in a Motel Six - little towels, tiny soap, etc. The continental breakfast was a $5 option - not a big deal except that for the price we paid for the room it should have been included. The staffing seemed short-handed as well.

The hotel looks exactly like a Best Western Plus, with the exact same setup, however, the service was terrible. They are not knowledgeable (despite their great location). We went for breakfast an hour and a half before it ends and there was nothing. When we reported it, the rude receptionist said that it is just too bad, they had a big tour group staying over. So WHAT!!!?? The place is not well run and dirty. What a shame, a lot of potential.

Thank you for your informative review this helps us see where more training is needed. We pride ourselves in hiring locals who have been in Fairbanks for many years, so “not knowledgeable “comes as a surprise and is being looked into more. Sometimes the breakfast items get eaten faster than we can refill them, but our staff should always be polite in responding to guest. Thank you again for your comments; they are our best source for making improvements.

There is no such thing as a cheap hotel room in Alaska. This place, however, was great. Make sure you have a reservation, as it fills up quickly, especially during tourist season. I liked the Alpine Lodge because it was in a great location (near Fairbanks airport and the freeway to Denali and Anchorage) and was very clean with modern bathrooms and sleeping areas. Acceptable Wi-Fi signal was appreciated. The customer service was ok, something that the hotel could work on with their employees. The continental breakfast was $5.00 per person and had good coffee, waffles and eggs plus bagels and muffins. The lobby was a comfortable place to visit with local family members.

Room Tip: Ask for room away from Old Airport Road.
