We (me, kids 17, 12) called the university to see if they had public skating - and they did. Great prices to skate and rent for an hour - and compared to our local rinks in the Chicago are- nearly empty. There can't have been more than 30 people on the ice which is a full size arena. Nice atmosphere with a mix of young families and good skaters but no mad hooligans. Good music as well. My 12 year old thought his skates were the wrong size so went off to ask the young men at the rental/ticket office to change them. When I next looked round, one of them was kneeling on the floor patiently tightening every eyehole and bit of lace to ensure they gripped really well. I made sure to thank them afterwards as it made such a difference to our entire experience.
