“Large Animal Research Station tour is interesting and informative.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2011

I am a tour director who recently scheduled a LARS tour for my group. Our tour guide, Sally, was enthusiastic and informative. The tour lasted an hour, which was longer than advertised, but we were all engaged the entire time. She was able to get one of the animals to come close to her during the tour so that we could get a closer look, and some great pictures. The tours are only offered on certain days, so it is best to check their website, www.uaf.edu/research/lars. The LARS gift shop sells qiviut (soft musk ox hair) at a lower price than is available elsewhere. There is one porta-potty on site. There is a 200-foot walk to the tour site, but they will transport people who have mobility issues in a cart. This is a very worthwhile experience, and the tour fee supports their research.

“loved seeing the musk oxen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2010

We were in Alaska on a land/tour for 2 1/2 weeks and this was the only place we had an opportunity to see musk oxen so it was quite exciting for us. They look like such prehistoric creatures. It was fun seeing them up close with their young and the cariboo with their young. The free tour was enlightening letting us feel the antlers andfur of the animals. The gift shop was nice. The only bad thing is don't rely on the shuttle to take you back to the museum. We asked them to call and were told that the shuttle would take a while to arrive as they were very busy. We (2 women) were told to wait in the parking lot as they were closing the place. Luckily another tourist overheard the uncaring comments as they were made to us and offered us a ride to the museum of U of A

“Very Interesting Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2004

I wouldn't miss this. Great closeups of musk ox with babies, reindeer and caribou. Our guide gave us lots of information on the animals and the research station. We got to handle horns and antlers and feel a musk ox pelt. The guide was very knowledgeable. The gift shop had great t shirts and tiny bags for $1 of samples of musk ox fur. A great chance to see rare animals we never see in Ohio.
