“Very Unfriendly/Unhelpful/Uncaring Front Desk”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2010

Hotel Failings:
1. Very poor customer service. Incompetent and sometimes ugly desk staff.
It's hard to overstate how unfriendly and unhelpful some of the desk staff
are. Not what you would expect in Fairbanks at all. For this reason alone
I will not stay there again, ever.
2. Maintenance issues. Room to room phone system inop. Ice Machines
down on three floors. Very dirty windows obscuring views. Stains in tub.
Entryway into hotel dirty and unkept. Room key coding problems.
3. Lack of parking....for guests as the hotel parking lot is generally full of non guests
who the hotel will not evict. Getting a parking pass is nearly worthless. No spaces.
If you have a car, in downtown Fairbanks this is a huge problem.
4. Location. Downtown (if you can say Fairbanks still has a downtown). Near
noisy dive bars and with drunks roaming the streets all night fighting and carrying
on.

On the other hand:
1. Good, firm beds.
2. Free Wifi.
3. Very large rooms.

I generally pay higher rates and jump thru many hoops to get my
Marriott points. But in future in Fairbanks, I will just go to the Hampton
Inn, where they seem to care about guests.....and leave Marriott to
the unsuspecting tourists.

The location is perfect and the complimentary airport shuttle is very handy. All I had to do was use the specified phone down in baggage claim at the airport and they collected me within 10-minutes. Driver very friendly.

My room is amazing, very spacious, very clean and so comfortable. There's a desk with free wired internet, a couch, a king sized bed and a lovely bathroom (although when toilet flushes it's very loud). Flat screen TV, fridge, microwave, sink, all very handy to have.

The breakfast in the morning's was a big surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was more than happy with the variety: eggs, sausages, bagels, bread, tea, coffee, juice, hot chocolate, waffles, yoghurt, fresh fruit, muffins.

Some small annoyances for me - which are only very slight - I was put off using the hotel pool when I heard a number of guests complain about getting a rash from too much chlorine. My room keys were constantly deactivating themselves even though I kept them well away from my phone and other electronics. I stayed for 5 nights and my room keys would deactivate twice a day, it's frustrating. The elevators are very, very slow.

The hotel is currently undergoing major construction, they're refurnishing every room and a couple morning's I tried to sleep-in but was kept awake by tapping and banging from above and below me. But considering the amount of construction they're doing, I feel that this annoyance was only very minor, it could've been a lot worse I guess.

All in all, very impressed with this hotel and look forward to staying again!

We stayed for three nights. The room was larger, better maintained, and cleaner than several other Alaska hotels we've stayed in.

Spacious room. Clean. Wireless computer easy to log on to. Microwave. Two televisions, old style versus flat screen but worked fine and had two HBO channels so better than many other places in Alaska on that score. Provided reliable wake up calls. Nice sink and makeup counter separate from toilet/bath/shower. Decent breakfast laid out, and didn't have Fox network on the television during breakfast thank God! (What is it with Fox being turned on in most public places with a TV?) King size bed, which isn't as easy to come by in Alaska. Bed pretty comfortable, although I would have preferred a more plush mattress pad. Plenty of pillows. Friendly staff at desk. Across the street from the river, visitors center, and bridge that leads to a pretty church. Downtown so close to local shops. Free parking.

Fridge barely worked so we didn't eat the food we put in it. Thought about trying to get a window open for some fresh air but the bird poop outside the window changed my mind. Wanted hot chocolate in the mornings but none provided in the room or at breakfast. Toilet so loud it could wake the dead. Parking a little tight. Almost didn't even get a spot our last night, which should never happen to guests, but one opened up just as we were giving up.

I had a migraine my last day, nauseated, in pain, and dizzy, so was moving slow and the staff was pleasant about letting me check out late.

Overall this place is better than many hotels in Alaska. The fact that it was clean, the bed didn't hurt my back, and the staff understood the concept of customer service was a pleasant surprise. I will stay there again next trip.

First the Pros:
1. Great location for downtown activities
2. Rooms clean & spacious
3. Hot breakfast bar was plentiful & varied – fruits, waffles, bagles & breads, egg & sausage patties, etc
4. Lavelle’s Bistro was excellent. Very friendly, customer-oriented staff and awesome wine selection.

Now the Cons:
1. My room was on 3rd floor and could still hear street noise thru the night and even in the bathroom the next morning.
2. Noisy furnace
3. Check-in was a little ragged in that even though were checking in at 3, they only had rooms ready for 2 of our party of 4.

Bottom line, the hotel was ok, but nothing too whippy.

Not bad, it was very clean. The continental breakfast was good. There was quite a bit drunk people 20's-30's every time we went on the elevator. The pool was great! Again very clean. Parking lot was small, but you can park on the road during certain hours. There was a guy on the staff when we went to check in who seemed like he didn't really feel like working. But all other staff was great.
