“A Piece of Colonial History -- Interresting and Informative”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

Enjoyed visiting the home / tavern of George Washington's brother. I went to Fredericksburg because of the Civil War battle, but fell in love with this quaint city. So much history here! And this tavern was literally on the front row to historical events during the colonial and Civil War periods.

If you have an interest in history, and want to experience how our forefathers traveled and lived "back in the day." Visit the Rising Sun Tavern.

Interesting and Informative!

“Great historical site.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

Although called a tavern this establishment lost its license a few hundred years ago. It no longer serves food and drink but you are met at a door by a wench dressed in period costume who will give you guided tour and explain how the tavern functioned in its day. There is a small admission charge but it is well worth it. It is even a better deal if you get either a single day multi-function or never expiring multi-function ticket at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center.

“Tavern setting - enjoyable visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

This house (turned tavern) was build by George Washington's younger brother Charles. The tour guide was hilarious in the manner that he presented the tour - we couldn't stop laughing. He was "in-character" as he described the types of folks that would have visited the tavern and the social tone at the time.

Definately a recommended stop as you visit Fredericksburg. It is very close to Mary Washington's home and Kenmore.

“Great visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013 via mobile

We stopped of in Fredericksburg for a few hours for a slower pace. After walking for two days straight in DC, we were very pleased with this stop. Our guide greeted us in full colonial costume. She proceeded to invite us in and continued by getting into character and pulling us into colonial times as well. The kids loved the visit and we particularly loved to hear about Lafayette being honored in the home in the 1820's. Affordable, entertaining and a step back into history. :-)

“A one-of-a-kind experience . . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

This unique venue keeps the spirit of the American Colonial experience alive . . . in ways you might not have expected. Legend has it there is a ghost at Rising Sun that likes to bedevil the serving girls by lifting their skirts. He's a sweet natured presence though. If the girls say "That's enough, John," he is chastened enough to leave them be for a bit. You'll enjoy the Rising Sun . . . even if John doesn't test your virtue.
