“Good Southern comfort food at great prices.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014 via mobile

If you are looking for the ambiance of linen tablecloths and candlelight you won't find it here. What you will find is good down-home Virginia barbecue at reasonable price and good service. The decor is outdated and you'll have to go outside to around the back to use their restrooms. But that only adds to the charm! The coleslaw is homemade and is excellent as well as their own BBQ sauce. Much better than a chain restaurant. Being from the Richmond area I make it a point to stop for BBQ when I have the opportunity. Recommend it.

“I Should Eat Here More Often!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

Allman's BBQ has been a Fredericksburg institution since 1954. Their location is on Rt 1 and might go unnoticed if you aren't looking for it. The interior is old, the paint is peeling and it all makes you feel like you've dropped into one of the best possible hole in the wall places. I love it!

Their menu is very simple and everything on the menu is pure comfort food. Your two main choices are pulled or minced pork BBQ, or burgers. Both are good, but, I go there for a slow cooked BBQ sandwich that has gobs of pulled pork on it. The ratio of meat to bun is awesome. By the time, I top it with slaw and hot sauce, it's a race to eat it before the juciness or the concoction disolves the bun:)

I'm estimating that an Allman's sandwich has a full 6 ounces of pork on it. That's nearly double the amount that most other places put on a sandwich. If that's not enough for you, order a platter and double the meat.

The nice thing about their BBQ is that you can add their wonderful NOT TOO SWEET cole slaw and then your choice of hot sauce, or VA or NC style BBQ sauce to your sandwich. It's hard to describe how the simplicity of this elevates the sandwich to heavenly proportions. Really!

Allman's makes their own milk shakes from scratch and they limit their side orders to 5-6 home made comfort foods. Fries, homemade baked beans, mac and cheese, & Brunswick Stew etc.

Prices are low, quality is high and everything on the menu meets the definition of comfort food perfection. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It's clear that they like working there and treasure their customers as friends.

Allman's also offers ribs after 3:00PM, but, I've never been there then. But, I'll bet they are great.

“BBQ perfection....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

My family and I have recently dined (again) at Allman's which has been in that location for decades and shouldn't change a thing. The seating at the counter afforded my wife and daughter with a good vantage point for seeing how things work. The three person waitstaff and a kitchen assistant busily scurried around, and our waitress did a superb job ensuring all of our dining and drinking needs were met.

The pork BBQ sandwich and accompanying side of shoestring fries were prepared and delivered after a few moments. The pork was tender, and had a wonderful smoked flavor. The slaw which accompanied the pork under the top bun was a match made in heaven! The side order of baked beans were not excessivly sweet, nor overcooked.
The explanation of the sauces available was made clear to us all and our sweetened tea glasses stayed filled as we dined. The prices were very reasonable. The opportunity to come back and try their rib platter and handmade milkshake will surely lure me back there soon. I could not make my recommendation any clearer...but I hope you will find out yourself.

“Funky, delicious barbecue Joint.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

Off the charts on funky atmosphere. I had ribs (dry rub type) very good. It's not my very favorite kind, but they did a fine job of it. Cole slaw was yellow and kind of vinegary, and delicious (unlike any I've had elsewhere. Corn bread OK. Companion's pulled Pork was very good. Friendly folks.

“Great friendly service and a heck of a deal of a meal!”

Ok this stop was not on my diet. But tremendously good BBQ and wonderful family style cooked sides. Still doing a great job after all these years!
