“We Loved Inn at The Olde Silk Mill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2011

My wife and I were given a Weekend Getaway Trip as a Christmas Gift and we visited Fredericksburg in April 2011. Our Room at Inn at The Olde Silk Mill and the friendliness of management and staff were amazing. We were there on a pretty busy weekend and the Inn was pretty full. Our room and the amazing King Size bed were perfect. The Room was clean, the accommodations were just right and Ed at the Front Desk was very helpful in recommending places for lunch, dinner, and sightseeing. Not only will we be back, but we are buying a weekend getaway for our oldest daughter and her husband!

As part of a living social coupon, my husband and I stayed at the inn and extended our stay by a couple extra days. The staff, especially Anna and Nancy, were very pleasant and knowledgable about the area. Our room, although not the room I had booked on line, was very comfortable. It was like sleeping in your Grandma' s bedroom. The bed originally appeared to be soft, yet once we settled in, my husband and I had three excellent nights of restful sleep. We would definitely choose this room again. The breakfast could use a bit more imagination, but the selection, though not homemade, was varied and the coffee was good. This was our first experience at a bed and breakfast type of establishment. We found the atmosphere of the Inn very quaint and we plan to stay there again when we re-visit the area.

Room Tip: Book early

Room clean, bed comfy, decent location. But NONE OF THAT MATTERS if you can't get the primary function of a room -- sleep -- because the owners have booked the building behind the room for a concert that doesn't end until 12:30AM! Tried to move rooms but couldn't because they all were booked. Seriously, what hotel owner books a concert right next to their hotel??????????????

We were very sorry to hear of your experience during your stay. It is our intention to make our guest comfortable during their visit. I am glad yor found the room comfortable and the location to your satisfaction. We recently booked a couple local blues bands in our Silk Mill factory located behind the Inn. It was our intention to keep the guest not affilated with the entertainment in a different location of the building where the noice would not be heard. I am sorry due to the sell out of the Inn for this occassion ,this did not happen for you. The concert was suppose to end earlier then Midnight, and unfortunetly went a little over time. Booking music for the guest is a new venture for us, and that evening was a trail run for the sound. We have recently worked on the sound barrier for the Mill. Most guest attended the event and we offer it free of charge, and it is incorporated into their evening. We appreciate your feedback to make sure we satisfy ALL our guest. This was our first show, and we have learned a valuable lesson. This will make us more aware for future entertainment shows.
Sincerely,
Anna Sanborn

Do not stay at this B&B!!! This place is so bad that I am writing a negative review while sitting in the room. There is a concert venue next door, and they are having a concert on a Saturday night until 1am. The noise is so loud that we can't sleep. The front desk attendant lied and told us it would be over by midnight. Can you call it a bed and breakfast if you can't actually sleep? Clearly, the only way they can book rooms at this hotel is to cheat people on living social. This is not a reputable B&B, and I think it should be banned from the living social site.

We purchased two one-night stay deals from Living Social that we planned to use for our daughter's graduation in May but plans changed and we were not able to use them, as planned. We started to look into booking the rooms in June but experienced major difficulty getting a room on a weekend night; my husband called the Inn and explained the difficulties with their online booking system to see if we can get some help - either an extension on the expiration date or some other option. They were completely inflexible and unwilling to help. We finally booked a weeknight stay and just returned this morning. It was so bad that I had to sit down and write this review immediately!
We booked a queen bed room and got a closet sized room with a hard full sized bed. No air conditioning in our room so we opened the windows and went downstairs to ask for assistance. The night attendant said she won't turn the AC higher explaining that she just had to turn it down because one of the other rooms complained about the temp. So I asked for a fan. She pulled a window fan from the laundry room window and handed it to me in the hallway.
We did not get a wink of sleep in because of the noise from the outside, with the window fan in the window. The sheets were rough and scratchy; the bed was highly uncomfortable with a hard mattress and squeaky box spring/frame. We thought the stay could be redeemed with a nice breakfast but we were once again appalled to find a platter of cut up Entenmann's pastries; a basket of opened and partially empty English muffins, bagels, toast; community jars of opened and partially used strawberry jams, cream cheese and butter; cheap to-go coffee and coffee creamers; and cereal poured into clear see through containers.
It was such an awful experience that we were up, had 'breakfast', and left by 8:30am! Not a single hint of B&B hospitality or charm here .... don't consider stopping in here for anything!

Room Tip: Many other options....Don't stop here!

The pipes in the walls screeched every time we flushed our toilet. We thought it was just our pipes but were awakened throughout the night by the noise when the people in the rooms next to us flushed their toilets. This led to a sleepless night for us. We had stopped on our way to the Outer Banks in order to rest. However no rest was to be had at the Inn at the Olde Silk Mill.

My friend and I decided to buy a Living Social deal featuring this property, because she lives in Southern VA and I live in Northern VA, so this is almost halfway between us. Although the room was clean, it was in terrible shape. Dry rot in the bathroom baseboards and a hole in the sink basin made us happy that we were on the first floor; at least we wouldn't fall through to a bottom floor! And again, although the bed linens were clean, the bed was so hard we might as well have slept on the floor.

The breakfast is nothing special; bags of Thomas' bagels and English muffins, a couple of cereal choices, some fruit (including a very dry grapefruit!), OJ, milk, and coffee. Served on styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery.

I have to agree that although the decorating is lovely, with nice antiques, the quality of the property and the breakfast is more befitting a Motel 6 than a Bed & Breakfast.

Room Tip: Try the Courtyard Marriott!
