My employer booked me a room here. I thought that it was gonna be a good place to stay because I have had really great nights at countless other Howard Johnson locations. This place was kind of a dump. The entire hotel was dirty and the front desk people were unfriendly.
My next trip to Fredericksburg I stayed at the HOJO in Massaponax (just one exit south on I-95) and it was real nice.

Yes, I decided via internet where to stay for the first time in the Fredericksburg area, but I forgot that LOCATION should be the first concern. While the Howard Johnson's on Warrenton is reasonably close to the establishment we needed to visit, it was not in the best area of town. Apparently there were long-time residents staying at this hotel, which led us to feel uncomfortable by their general appearance and manner. (One "dirty in appearance" man was sitting on the top of the stairs reading a magazine and didn't bother to say anything or even look up as we tried to go around him to continue on our way to our room.)

Our room on the second floor was designated as a "non-smoking" room, yet the bedspread had cigarette burn holes. The carpet was dirty in many places and there was a sticky "residue" on the dresser area near the TV. Speaking of the TV, the remote did not work, whether due to a dead battery or what, we did not persue the reason.

This was a family night stay for us and we were very disappointed. We felt unsafe, insecure and uncomfortable there. We would NOT recommend this hotel/motel to anyone--regardless of the fact that it was priced much less than many hotels/motels in the Fredericksburg area.

We will be making many trips now to that area and will be making plans to stay in another area of town in a place with a better reputation.

My recommendation: Don't stay at the Howard Johnson's on Warrenton Rd in Fredericksburg, VA.

We stayed here for one night. We were looking for a good deal using those travel coupons found in a discount hotel deals flyer. We choose this place based on price and a hot breakfast. The hotel clerk would not accept the price on the hotel coupon (even though we met all the criteria) and we had to pay 5 or 10 dollars extra.

The hotel itself looks like it's in a bit of a rough area just off the I95. There's a restaurant next door to the hotel that sells spicy Carribean/Indian food. We didn't want to try our luck there and went across the street to a rundown plaza. There wasn't too much choice there either. The hotel also has no guest laundry.

The room itself was around the back of the hotel. The room itself was okay but we did see a bug in it. In fairness to the hotel this bug may have flown in while we had the doors open to bring our luggage in.

The next morning we decided to try the hot breakfast. There was a hassle getting it as we had to fill out a form stating we were hotel guests. The breakfast wasn't a buffet and my order of bacon and eggs was very blah.

All in all we would have stayed somewhere else if we had known better.
