I looked for a hotel rather late for the weekend of MIT's graduation (and Harvard, and other schools, no doubt). The Holiday Inn was one of the few that was $200 or less, still available, wasn't in a totally sketchy or inconvenient location, and got decent reviews, so I went with it.
The Holiday Inn is in Brookline on the Green "C" line (which runs right down Beacon Street, with the St. Paul St. stop right across the street from the hotel), which makes it very convenient to take the T into the city (though it is a bit far out on the green line). There also tends to be a line of taxis waiting on Beacon St in front of the hotel, if you need a taxi. We didn't have a car, so I don't know what parking was like. I didn't walk around the neighborhood during this stay, but I know from past experience that there's a great (if crowded, busy, with a long wait) place for breakfast called Zaftig's less than a half mile away, a good restaurant called Jae's really nearby, and some other good dining within a mile. The Brookline area is quite nice - I walked up St. Paul St to Commonwealth to the BU Bridge to walk across to Cambridge (about 1.4 miles in total) after I checked out, and it was all red brick neighborhoods with shady parks and a nice, neighborly feel. It's also very close to BU.
As for the hotel itself, we were in one of the tower rooms on the 6th floor. Except when people stood right outside my door talking, I found the room to be very quiet and quite well sound insulated. It was a good sized room overlooking Beacon St. Beds were reasonably comfortable, wifi worked fine, bathroom was clean (though the toilet was initially problematic, my sister fixed it and it didn't cause problems after that). It wasn't anything exceptional, but it was a comfortable, quiet, reasonable place to stay. On my last night there, I wandered around the hotel (ostensibly looking for something to drink - the vending machines are on a couple of the floors in the tower but not all of them) and wandered into the long portion of the hotel, which was a bit odd - benches and ramps up the middle leading to an indoor pool and hot tub, raised in the center of the atrium at the end of a long wide hall. All the rooms in that section had windows that looked in on the atrium, not sure why. The tower had a super-slow elevator, and the hotel did have a bit of a dated feel, but not run-down.
Overall, I'd say the hotel is a fine, reasonably priced (for Boston) place to stay in a nice neighborhood, and convenient to the T.
