“Impressive little visitors center and park.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

The Fossil Butte Monument Visitor's Center was a great place to stop. We didn't have much time there but took it all in, just the same. There are a lot of real fossils to see and several replicas to give you an idea of scale. The park itself is far and wide with a lot of different animals to see, the most of which is antelope. We drove on some of the "no sedan" roads (meaning AWD is important) and it was really fun. It's also one of the free national parks around, too. Visitor Center closes at 5:30, but the park remains open until dusk.

“Very impressive natural history monument”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

The Fossil Butte Monument Visitor's Center was impressive. There were hundreds of fossils on display along with accompanying information about them. There was a video display explaining how scientists and artists work together with the fossilized remains and are able to come up with color drawings of the animals and fish. We did not have time to take the nature walk or other hikes but will return next summer to do those.

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Tis is the remains of an old lake that contains a lot of fossils in shale rock. A portion of this is saved by the National Park Service just outside of Kemmerer, WY. It is very interesting to see and hear the stories of how these 60 + million year old fossils were perserved.
Close by in Kemmere you can also visit the first J C Penny store and his home. Also you can set up trips in private areas to dig your own fossils for around $65. If you do not feel like going out and finding your own (guaranteed) you can just purchase them locally.

“gem tucked in soutwestern WY”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

Great scenery. The area had been underwater and the resulting sea fossils in the area are amazing. One of the pull outs had rangers actively seeking fossils just off the parking lot. All staff more than happy to talk to you about the area and any fossils. Very little traffic in this park. Can see it in 2 hours or so. Have your kids to the Jr. Ranger program. Provides good information/background for the adult!

“Awesome!”

The quarry hike is awesome! It's long and a bit strenuous but worth it! The visitor center is chock full of fossils to see.
