We had a family meal at the original Gustav's in Portland perhaps eight years ago, and it was a fabulous experience in terms of the food and atmosphere. So when we made a family reservation at the Vancouver WA location, we had high expectations that, unfortunately, were not fulfilled in any way. We had a reservation for 7 and arrived 20 minutes early. Although the decor is faux-German, there was no German music - just the usual piped-in pop you hear everywhere. We were not seated for 30 minutes (10 minutes late). This was a Friday night, so we thought it was just that they were packed. Wrong. When we were seated, we noticed lots of empty tables. Guess they just didn't have enough staff. Menu: disappointment. One corner featured German food. The rest was from everywhere else - American, French, Italian, whatever. Definitely they have cut out a lot of items from the original Portland menu. I guess that as they have expanded to new locations, they have had to diversify the menu to get enough business. I had Sauerbraten with red cabbage and spaetzle, and was happy with the taste. Potato pancakes and schnitzels looked okay. All of the wurst on the plates were overcooked and dry and pretty tasteless. Overall, pretty disappointing considering the standard set by the original Gustav's.
