“Disappointment in taste and atmosphere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

We had a family meal at the original Gustav's in Portland perhaps eight years ago, and it was a fabulous experience in terms of the food and atmosphere. So when we made a family reservation at the Vancouver WA location, we had high expectations that, unfortunately, were not fulfilled in any way. We had a reservation for 7 and arrived 20 minutes early. Although the decor is faux-German, there was no German music - just the usual piped-in pop you hear everywhere. We were not seated for 30 minutes (10 minutes late). This was a Friday night, so we thought it was just that they were packed. Wrong. When we were seated, we noticed lots of empty tables. Guess they just didn't have enough staff. Menu: disappointment. One corner featured German food. The rest was from everywhere else - American, French, Italian, whatever. Definitely they have cut out a lot of items from the original Portland menu. I guess that as they have expanded to new locations, they have had to diversify the menu to get enough business. I had Sauerbraten with red cabbage and spaetzle, and was happy with the taste. Potato pancakes and schnitzels looked okay. All of the wurst on the plates were overcooked and dry and pretty tasteless. Overall, pretty disappointing considering the standard set by the original Gustav's.

“Gustavs in Vancouver, WA”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

I like the new menu with small plates available. This makes eating out more affordable and one can select a nice variety of small plates instead of one big meal. The atmosphere is pleasant and service is usually good. Friendly staff.

Met friends in the lounge for a fun holiday gathering. Awesome food and wine to die for. So many choices. Warm place to meet and great waiters.

“December Group Dinner: A not so funny comedy of errors”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2013

A week prior to our special dinner I called for a reservation for 10 at 6pm. Not available due to groups, they said and the only alternative was 7:30pm (this is a weeknight, mind you). I accepted the time and asked that I receive a confirming e-mail (never got it). Several people dropped out due to the time so I reconfirmed the day of the event for 7 people. At 7:15 we walked in and were told to wait (no problem). Around 7:30 we were told our table had been given away due to a large group's need. They offered us a booth with a chair at the end. Not wanting to be uncomfortable, I asked that they ensure our comfort in the booth or get us the reserved table. We waited about 10 min. more and, voila' there was a comfortable table available for us. The dining room was NOT crowded. We had a very nice and efficient waiter who took our orders... first drinks and then food. We were enjoying our drinks and the waiter notified us that the delay in the food arriving was due to "new people in the kitchen." He then offered some rolls and butter which we gladly accepted (why were rolls not the norm?). Once we received our dinners they were, in general, good. The schnitzels were soggy, however... like they had been placed on a steam table. The sauce was kinda blah. But, really the dinner was well received as we were very hungry. As we paid for our meals, we noticed the place had just about cleared out. Thank goodness for the great company at our table. Other wise the response by Gustav's was not acceptable for our special evening.

been going to Rheinlander (Gustav's) for over 45 years. the last couple of years they keep dropping dishes that they were famous for, rotisserie chicken and now the pretzel burger. now we have nothing to go back for. I think the daughter needs to talk to dad. if your a sausage person still a great place.
