“The Courtland Hotel, Ft Scott KS”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

We passed through Ft Scott two years ago and were staying elsewhere but happened to "find" the Courtland while walking back from dinner one night. We walked inside the front lobby and the owner gave us a lot of background of that area before and after the Civil War and it was fascinating. I resolved that if we ever came that way away, we'd stay at the Courtland so we did last June. Our stay was extremely enjoyable and the owner went out of his way to make us feel at home. All the rooms have A/C plus there is powerful WiFi everywhere. Well worth the stop!

We stayed at the Courtland hotel in Fort Scott KS this past June. What a unique place, a remodeled railroad boarding house. Quiet, very clean and the inn keepers actually sat and visited with us, not like your chains where they barely acknowledge who you are. Only problem would be if you have trouble climbing stairs because all rooms are on the 2nd floor and no elevator. Continental breakfast was ample enough to start the day off. Will definitely stay there again if we ever get to Fort Scott again.

We like to stay in old hotels in old downtown areas and the courtland hit the spot. When we checked in Frank the owner greeted us warmly and showed and shared the history of the place. It was 104 degrees outside and we were pleased that our upstairs room was a cool 68 degrees when we arrived. We walked to supper downtown and had a good nights sleep. The price was cheaper than the local chains.

Early into our Route 66 (and around) trip we decided to try and avoid the chain motels and go for character. In the Courtland we were not disappointed. And it was very good value for money. Our host, Frank, was a mine of information and stories, not only about Fort Scott but much much more. Yes, our standard rooms were a little small but we were only spending one night, and they were very clean, quiet and comfortable. We visited the Fort, which was just around the corner, the following morning - it was beautifully kept and indeed we were full of praise for the NPS/rangers throughout our trip. Definitely worth the detour from Route 66.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

We loved it when we stayed to take in the December Candlelight Tour of old Fort Scott. Hotel is from the 1800's so do NOT expect spacious bathroom or shower, more than one chair in the room, room for lots of luggage, etc. Expect grand wide wooden stairway, quiet radiator heat, 10-foot ceilings in rooms, wonderful bed, lobby coffee, tea or hot cocoa available 24 hours a day, ambience. Breakfast was plentiful, conversation with owner Frank and other visitors pleasant. Will stay again -- it's like "coming home" since our own home was built in 1896.

Room Tip: There is no elevator but Frank is willing to carry your luggage.
